new guy starting trouble
« on: September 26, 2005, 09:07:43 AM »
just found the site and im pleased to have a place i can come out of the closet. (no not that closet!) the crossbow closet. so i have a question for my first post. i read all the xbow companies claiming to have the fastest bow. doing my own research it looks like alot of them cheat to get the numbers up. for example brand A claims 350fps but that is with a 18inch arrow. brand B (barnett) claims thier revolution shoots 345 with a 22inch arrow. so wouldn't the barnett which everyone loves to bad mouth be the most powerful xbow out there? no other brand i could find shoots a 22inch arrow? so all the other brands claiming to be faster are cheating by firing lighter shorter arrows. can the exo and ten point brands shoot a 22inch arrow above 340? i dont know but it seems to me the numbers are being manipulated in there favor. ok flame away. Not only crossbows, vertical bow companies do the same thing. Most guys shoot a heavier arrow or bolt than what the bow companies and xbow companies use to get that speed they are bragging about.  I will take a heavier arrow and penetration over speed anyday.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

i kinda thought that too. i remember a couple years ago my friend bought a hoyt bow. it claimed to shoot xxx fps with xxx grain arrow, so we took it to a range and shooting the exact same arrow weight we couldnt get it near the claimed speed. not even when we up'd the poundage above thier recomended weight. we if i remember only got to w/in about 50fps. i started this post because my old boss said because my arrow were lighter i didnt have the range or power of his compound set at 65 lbs. so you can imagine his surprise when my barnett revolution shot arrows through his target. i dont remember the brand. he was pissed. his arrows went in about 6inches and stopped. my bolts shot through and went about 30 yrds before sticking in the grass. his arrows should have more energy and so forth on paper. so the only thing i can think of is crossbow bolts dont flex and lose energy the way longer arrows do.  dont know? im not a engineer heck i prolly spelled it wrong. just my personal observations. Yea the shorter the shaft the stiffer it is. You will also notice that a heavier arrow seems to shoot higher at least it does for me. I also noticed that a bolt with a half moon nock shoots higher than a flat nock out of my Barnett Ranger recurve xbow. I have the 2117's with flat nocks sighted in at 20 yards with my top dot and my 3rd dot is right on at 35. If I shoot these arrows at 45 they drop like a rock yet the heavier 2219's I have with half moon knocks drop right in the bullseye at 45 yards using my third dot and these arrows while the lighter ones with the flat nocks hit the bottom of the target. Were talking a couple of feet here difference.

well its been some time now and my attempt to upset all the guys who dont like barnett has failed or they know they cant make a good argument against the speed of the barnett rev. im just tired of all these other brands claiming fastest this and fastest that but not one can match the speed of the rev. i know i know excalibur makes a bow with a faster fps but what length arrow does it shoot?..... not 22! so shoot a 22 out of it and see what cha get? ha im waitin sissys

They shoot the bows with out any thing on them and it is like 5grs per inch is how they get the fast Speed . But if you shoot them that way and some thing goes wrong with it not cover under want. So that is why they say shoot a 590gr out arrow. I am shooting 4 inch vans with a Beman carbon bolt and a Rocket Mini Blaster 3L 76gr head. And the thing is moving on. I have THE Black Hole target it is 22x16x11. It is new and my Horton with the beman bolt and 75gr field point will shoot thr the new target at 25 yards. I have the Horton Legends XL 175pd. And it shoot hard. Darton makes a new xbow and they said it is fast.
475gr bolt @ 343 FPS
525gr bolt @ 331 fps
And it is only a 165pd xbow. I read a test on it in Peterson Crossbow Magazine. VM :D

I have 2 Excalibur Paradoxs , 175 lb , that go thru the chrono at 340 fps with a 20" 410 gr bolt and the Exomax my cousin has is faster by 10 fps but uses a 350 gr bolt which is the min weight for Excalibur. I also have 4 Excal Vixens that shoot between 285 and 295 fps and I get pass thrus on all deer I have shot with my Excals. Just depends how far you want to go to retrieve your bolts.
I say shoot what you find comfotable for you, whether its Barnett, Horton, Darton, Ten Point or Excalibur. I lean toward Excal as I've had a dozen since 1990 and still have six of them

If you can find your bolt at all... :)  My TenPoint Elite Lite does 290 fps with a 420 grain bolt.  Plenty fast for me.  Considering that the little guy has a 9.25" powerstroke, that ain't half bad...
