I have a Traditioons .50 with a 1:48 rifleing twist.
1. I shot some of this in it:

It says on the can "Use no lubes and seat powder firmly" I did use Bore Butter. Was that dangerous? Why is that. Is it just not required?

2. With that rate of rifling twist, will it shoot sabbot hunting bullets OK?

3. I got a powder horn. I filled it once, years ago. I can't remember how I did it. Does it open from the other end somehow? The only hole I can find is the one the powder comes out of (duhh).

1:48 twist will work with both conicals and round ball but it isn't optimum for either. I'm not sure why it says no lube but they probably don't feel it's required to keep their fowling under control. As for the powder horn, I just used a small funnel and poured the powder thru the pore spout hole.

Sabots? Can't figger out how to fill the horn? Grrrrrrr. Sorry, I'd like to answer, but my tongue is bleeding right now.

Never hesitate to ask questions.
Litterally everyone learned something for the first time once.
Even the self proclaimed 'experts' learned from others.
Some 1:48 twist rifles shoot very well indeed with certain bullets.
My Lyman Deerhunter is 1:48 and shoots certain sabot bullets very well and handles the maxiball plenty well enough.
It will shoot light charges of 2fg under the patched roundball into one ragged hole at 25 ayrds and about 1.5" at 50 yards with issue open sights.
It will shoot2 to 3' at 100 yards with certain sabots which ain't at all bad for any rifle much less one that i paid a whopping 140 bucks for.
You're fine with Bore Butter, but less is better than too much.
it only takes a coating of lube to keep leading down.
I swab between shots so I'm not concerned with fouling build up.

Regarding getting the powder into the horn:

I just finished a little project on my powder horn. I added a brass bushing and a brass plug that threads into the bushing to the base of the horn. Sure makes getting the powder in easier. Here's a link to the part:

I also added a brass push button valve to the dispensing end of the horn:

Both parts have increased the utility of my horn.

While shooting I swabbed beeetween shots just so I wouldn't get the ball stuck.

I could think of something to modify my horn at the large end. Drill a hole and tap it with pipe threads, then plug it. I just think it's a nussance trying to fill the horn through that tiny hole

What ever you do with the horn, please make sure that there is no chance for powder to leak out or sparks to fall in.

Most often your 1/48 will shoot saboted rifle bullets without a problem. Sabots really do not require lubrication thay are self-lubricating. Sitting Bore Buttter on top of AP might contaminate part of you load with moisture absorbed from the BB.

Are you lubricating the sabot to get it down the barrel? If you are you may want to change sabots there is a wide variety of sabots out there from thin to thick. Right now I think the Harvester "Crush Rib" is the thinnest followed by the MMP HPH-24.

I shoot several different side hammers from fast twist TC's to 1/48 twists. They work really well with 45 caliber bullets. I am shooting t7, your AP should be a cleaner burning load and will require less maintenance.

Make sure you follow you load requirements as directed in you manual.

I second jeager106 remarks do not be afraid to ask questions, you are shooting a traditional weapon you are just not shooting it traditionally - that will cause some problems with a few people on this forum, but believe me Graybeard would agree you have posted the question in the correct location.

The only loads I've shot so far are round balls, no sabots yet. I did want to ask the question though. And I see by some of the other discusions that you can hunt with roundies instead of sabots. That's good, as well as cheap. Those sabots are much more expensive.
