My Handi has gone all to heck!
« on: November 25, 2005, 11:51:00 AM »
I replaced my .204 Handi's stock with a Choate polymer. The typical groups I was getting before the stock change w/Hornady 32 and 40 gr were .50-.75" at 50 yards. Yes I know that's close for a .204 (the private range I belong to is only 50 yards) and yes I know those are crappy groups, however it did suffice for g.hogs at about 75 yards away just fine. I was hopeing after shooting it for a few hundred rounds that the groups would improve gradually. You know, after the roughness in the barrel gets smoothed out some. Now I change the stock and the groups have gone to 3-4" at 50 yards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What gives guys? All I did was swap stocks. Did not mess with scope/mount and yes it's still tight and solid. I've already sold the wood stock and have shipped it to the new owner so I can't go back to the way things were. Tried it with the bipod, no bipod, resting on the bottom of the action, resting on the forearm, offhand, it's all no good. Need some help here guys real bad!

Check the forearm and see if it's tighter on one side of the barrel than the other. Try loosening the forearm screw, check to be sure the firearm is not pressing upward extremely hard on the barrel., Check to see if the buttstock is firmly tightened but not overly tight. Check to see if the buttstock is "nestled" into the reciever area and centered on the buttstock. shoot with no uneven pressure on the stock or gun. It seems as if something is not fitting as well as before. Last option, buy or borrow a set of wooden stocks and try the gun with them. Kepp us up to date on this problem, very interesting but not unsolvable...<><....

Sounds to me like the forearm is putting pressure on the barrel .

Try backing the screw back about a 1/2 turn and wiggle the forearm to loosen it up a bit . Or add the o-ring under the forearm screw .

Better yet, remove the forend, rest the rifle on the hinge and shoot it, that will remove any doubt about the forend pressure. Just be careful when opening the action!! I wouldn't do this if the barrel is loose when locked up, action closed, which means there are other issues.

Thanks for the tips. I'll give 'em a try today or tommorrow. I had thought about removing the fore-arm and shooting a few rounds without it but was not sure that it was a good idea. My action locks up solid (I think  ). I'll see how solid it really is before try though. I'll post what happens.
