Best way to scope a Garand?
« on: October 23, 2005, 02:47:22 PM »
I've been blessed with a Garand that shoots like dream.  However, my eyes just don't do very well with iron sights anymore.  It it would be great to scope the MI and still be able use the 8 round cliip.  What kind of costs would be involved?  Do any of those "no gunsmithing required" mounts work?

Blessings!

Well I don't mean to be a smart allec but the best way to scope a garand would be to buy a $250 stevens bolt action rifle.

ShootnStr8 ol Buddy, don't listen to Krochus, he's pulling your leg.  The best way to scope that Garand is to have it fitted for a "D" Model scope mount.  That is the side mount that allows use of the 8 round clips when reloading.  The "C" model scope mount did not allow use of the 8 round clip.

I believe Springfield Armory may have some information on those scope mounts, the "D" model mounts.  If not, then maybe Fulton Armory.  HTH.  Mikey.

You'll need one of those lace-on cheek pieces too.

Thanks guys for the prompt replies.

Krochus you may be right about cost effectiveness.  This is seeming to be an expensive propostion.

Mikey, are you the "go to guy" or what!  I poked around the Springfield and Fulton site to no avail.  I may just need to write them an email.  If the "D" mount is in the same price range as the ones for the M-14 variants, then we are looking at a serious chuck of change just for the mount.  Do you know if the mount handles conventional modern scopes or do you have to use the old 2.5 X GI issue?

Shorty, great point. I already find that I need to use the laced-on cheek piece with iron sights.  I'm wondering then how the scope would work.

It would be nice to get a 3 to 9X on this rifle as it shoots really well.  For me, it started as a Walmart (or some other big box) bargin about 20 years ago.  I followed the NRA booklet on accurizing it with the fiberglass bedding and the other whatnots.  Shotgun News had a place selling Numrich so-called "match" barrels on sale which it now wears.

The best I've been able to do is a 9/16" five shoot group at 100 yards and most of the time I could keep them within 1.5 inches.  This is harder to do with my eyes these days.

I'm curious to see what it would do with a scope and some longer range shooting with it would be fun. But I'm thinking my curiosity and fun is too expensive and not practical.

Additional thoughts?

Blessings!

Hey, doesn't anyone make one of those "scout scope setups for the Garand?  You might even be able to remove it some time later on w/o screwing up the original sights???????  Just a thought!

Hmmmm, I seem to remember conventional style scopes.  I can't recall if there are any differences in the frame where the base would mount up twixt the M-1 and the M-14.  I think this would take a call or e-mail to the tech department at Springfield.  I don't recall the mounts being very sophisticated, I think.....Mikey.

They are out of stock right now.  But, you might want to look at this.  Or maybe search Midway.com for them.

Thanks for the Chaper N Dirt, Koli.  I see that Cheaper N Dirt has the Garand mounts back in stock.

Does anyone have any experience with these mounts or other B-Square products?  I'm wondering if their creative no gunsmithing configurations provide a truly solid base for mounting a scope.

Thanks for all the helpful replies thus far!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Numrich has somethings along the lines of what you are looking for.  Every time I click on just the base though it brings up a page with the base, rings, new barrel, flash hider, ect...  It is there though.  THe Scope base is $41.55 and the rings are $72.75.  Here's the link  http://www.e-gunparts.com/DisplayAd.asp?chrProductSKU=546800&chrSuperSKU=&MC=

Hope this helps in some way.
