Accuracy of the new 700
« on: November 25, 2005, 03:03:14 AM »
Is the accuracy as good in the new 700s as the older ones. I have a 700 adl 270 made around 1980 and was going to trade it off for a bdl or mountain a couple years ago. My 270 shoots a 5/8 group at 100yds, the dealer told me that I would not be happy with the newer rifle. He said he didn't think they would be as accurate!!! I have did alittle work on the present 270, put a nice BellCarlson stock on it,bedded the action and free floated the barrel and had the trigger adjusted to 2 1/2 lbs. I have several other cals. and makes in the safe, this is still my go to gun. She is not as pretty as it was but is just a tool of the trade. Zeak

I'd keep the beater and just buy a new rifle.  If you let the old rifle go, then no matter how good the new one shot, it'd never compare to the one that got away.
I don't know which direction you were going with the new rifle but a 7-08 in a CDL or Mountain Rifle would be hard to beat.  And, of course, everybody needs at least one '06.
To answer your question, after the usual tinkering (adj trigger, bed, etc) I believe my new Rems shoot as well as the older ones.  And I've got them that go back 40 years.
