barrel recommendations for whitetail
« on: November 16, 2005, 06:03:28 PM »
Gent's,

I an new to the Encore game, but I ordered myself a frame (pistol) and converted it to a rifle by picking up a hardwoods stock and forearm.  I now have a 7-08 barrel on it's way and am loading up to break in the barrel.

So of course now that I've ordered a barrel my mind is turning to the next logical thing... another barrel -

If I get a chance I'd like to hunt deer with a pistol, what barrels are favorites, I'd like to buy the right one the first time.

Tip's, recommendations, and how to hide the expenses from the wife all welcome.

Try the new 460 S&W Mag.  You can shoot 45 L/C, 454 Casull and the 460 Mag. The round is a 200 yard round as long as the shooter is up to the task.  :D

You already load for the 7-08.....make it easy on yourself and get a 7-08 15" barrel.  You wont regret it!  I have one and they are not bad at all to shoot and it is still a great round out of the 15" barrel.

Good luck.

Tell her the barrels are an investment.  "They go up in price and are a great way to  make money."  Worked for me on the first 5 barrels.

Then have children.  My line is "I have to get a gun for each child to be able to hunt when they get old enough".  Worked for the next few frames.

Then you can work on the family aspect:  "Your brother will have to have something to shoot when he goes hunting that one time in his life"  We are currently using this one and it should last for at least two more Encore barrels!

I chose the .270 hunter package, as I felt that a .270 would give me a wide variety of different loads when I start reloading. Anything from brush dogs to whitetail to elk could be taken with this pistol, and the purchase of multiple barrels didn't figure into the plans yet. Wasn't thinking more barrels...just what I could do with one for the time being.

But the more I read you addicts, I have about 5 more "dream barrels" that I want to buy. You guys are going to drain my kid's college fund. Oh well, they can always hunt for a living. Guides do well, don't they???

If I had to do it all over again, I think I would choose the 7mm-08 for that 150 yd shot, and a 41 mag barrel for working the cedar swamps.

My 15" Encore 460 shoots the 454 Casulls and 45 Colts really well. They all group together, when I shoot the 460's, they group okay, but about 10-12" below the Casull and colt. I plan on using mine with the Casull's and Colts, have given up for now the 460's.

A lot better accuracy with the 460 Mags. The 45 L/C are not good in my opinion.  :D
