25-06 bullets 4 WT
« on: January 26, 2006, 05:43:35 AM »
If you had to choose a bullet for south/eastern whitetails(normally<200lbs) to be shot out of a 25-06, what would it be. To narrow it down a bit between the 100gr TSX, 110 gr Accubond or 117 speer Hot Core.
This is assuming that they all will shoot in my gun. Also where I will hunt with this gun will probally be only up to a 250 yrd. shot.
All suggestions and opinions welcome. thanks, DM

PS- Please nobody ruffle nomo's feathers!!! JK LOL Enjoyed !!!!

Actually, given your constraints I can't see a clear winner.  If cost is an object, the Speers will work wonderfully.  For the size of the animals you mention, I can't see a need for the Accubond or TSX construction - but then again there is nothing wrong with using them either.  All of your choices will hold together and give ample penetration on deer out to 250 yards; trajectory is not an issue; recoil will be slightly less with the TSX....   :money:

Gotta agree with Lonestar. I use the 117 gr Hornady and it works wonderfully well. I've used Speer hot cores in the past in other cartridges and I like those bullets. As for the premium bullet's, I've never found the need for them but surely they'll work well if your willing to pay for them.

A long time ago a friend told me that someday I would have to quit drinking coffee after 7:00 P.M., well I think it happened last night.

You said assuming they will shoot & I agree on that, as finding this out
is obviously important, though you shots are't long range, you may need to "thread the needle". Other than that they will all do fine with the Whitetail. Since all three will work, I would try the Speer first, no need paying for features that you are not using. The only exception that I can think of is if any Hogs drift through this property, if so I would prefer the
TSX.

Have a good evening.

I have shot one northern Whitetail doe(140 lbs dressed), with a
100 TSX, fired out of my Tikka M-695.  Impressive is not a
strong enough word to describe the bullet performance.
I purposely just caught the back of the shoulder blade,
heart high.  What a mess!  Complete pass through, vitals
turned to blood pudding, and the deer maybe stumbled 10
yards.  It would have been Bang Flop, if I would have held high
in the shoulders, but I wanted to see what a bone hit, going
into the vitals would do.  Let's say that I believe I have qualified
this bullet, for me, to handle those poor hits, that can happen
in hunting.  It is going all the way through, and it is going to
transfer a ton of energy.  Incidentally this was a 60 yard shot.
I hope to get a few more test cases out to 250 yards, but those
opportunities are rare, in the north woods of Wisconsin.  Too
many trees!  I need to do a Texas bean field hunt :)

So my choice would be the TSX bullet.  I have had great results
with various Barnes XBT bullets, too, but these TSX bullets are
suppose to open up easier, on soft tissue hits.  I don't know if
they do, yet, but I have had great results with 130 gr. .308 cal
Barnes XBT's opening up on soft tissue hits, so I don't know
if TSX's have to be better.

200 pound deer?
.25-06?
250 yards?
100g TSX, 110g Accubond or 120g Hot-Cor?

Don't have a .25-06 but I load my .257 Roberts to +P pressures and velocities, and don't give up much to a .25-06.  I've been shooting the following:

110g Accubond
115gTSX
120g Partition
120g Grand Slam
120g A-Frame

I tend to prefer heavier bullets and would forego the 100g stuff.  But I’d be comfortable with any of those listed.

Where in the south east are you shootin' 200 lb deer on the average? Now in Southern California, the fella across the street from me was deadly with the 90 grain factory load, but them desert mulies seldom topped 100 lbs.

Slamfire, 200 lbs. is not the average. Read closer man. I sais normally <(that means LESS than) 200lbs.

Just messin with ya slam. I wish the average size deer was 200 lbs. around here. Very few deer here make it to the 200 lb mark. I've been lucky enough to kill a 198 and 197 lb deer. Both were eight pointers. Can't seen to bust the 200 mark.

The 117 hotcores shoot extremlly well (dime size groups at 100) from my gun. Will most liklly stay with them, but there again I'm bad about tring differant things. This is mainlly my woods gun. From there I'll step up to my 270WSM and if need be my 7mmRUM or if I'm feeling weak my 300RUM. Most of the time I can't decide which gun to carry. I normally just assign a gun to a stand for that year and go from there.

That way when I get a new stand, I have a legitimate reason for a new rifle. (feel free to use if nessasary)

Good Day, DM

My experience is with Speer 100 grain SPBT bullets. I have used them in White Tail Deer, Mule Deer and Antelope. I have not recoved any bullets and everything I hit has gone down. If you want a tougher bullet try the 100 grain SP.

I guess I stuck with the 100 grain BT's  because they worked so well on game and I found a load that lets me place them where I want them.

Actually, I think a Barret .50 BMG would about cover anything you could see from there.  :-D

I've used the Sierra 120 HPBT on three whitetail in the last few years.  Twice the bullet went through both sides on broadside shots and once a bullet was found under the hide on the outside rear of the rib cage.  This deer was hit straight on in the white spot in the neck.  All the shots were good lung/heart shots.  Nothing but a bloody mess inside.  Deer flopped to the ground at the shot on all three.  None of the deer were spooked and all were less than 100 yards.  One was about 40, the other two about 90 yards.

I really like this bullet and would use it again without hesitation.  I use a heavy load of H4831 out of a 26" Douglass barrelled Remington 700 in 25-06.

Good shooting.

Then that's what I would stick with. I currently use 117 gr Hornady Interlocks in my 25-06 and they are deadly on Alabama sized whitetails. I have not personally shot a deer with any of the Barnes X bullets but opinions from my friends that have used them range all over the spectrum. Some like them but others swear to never use them again on deer sized game. The story from the negative side being that they found them to be a little too toughly constructed for Alabama whitetails. Especially on a rib/lung area hit that encountered no major bone. They recovered the deer they shot with them but claimed that they just pencil holed through and that the deer would run a lot further than ones they have shot with standard lead tipped bullets.

I would go with the Nosler 110 gr AB for your 25-06. Should be a good all around bullet.

If the 117 gr hot cores  have been shooting good then  thats what I would use to.  I have been using 120 gr Speer SP. They group well in my 25-06. I have always had complete pass through and good wound channel with the speers.

I've owned my 25/06 for over 15 years but never used it on deer (I've been in non rifle states for the last 14 yrs).  But I'd pick the most accurate bullet of at least 100 grs and go deer hunting, I'd don't believe any deer would notice the difference.
