Anyone actually shot the 7.62x39 Rossi ?
« on: November 10, 2005, 05:40:19 PM »
I'm a bit concerned that rumor may be right and the Rossi might not fire the "Wolf" 7.62x39 ammo. That would be a real shame.

So anyone have any real world experience with the 7.62x39 Rossi?

I have came a hair from ordering one, but..no I haven't shot one yet.
I too would like the idea of a 7.62x39 single shot. But I have heard only the same as you probably have. With the Primers set deeper than normal and also usually being harder for this caliber, I think the hammer fall might be a tad weak to engage it fully.

I talked to a Rossi Rep. He said that the .39 and the .06 both have stronger hammer springs and should be able to shoot any of the cheap, surplus ammo. :?

The CZ bolt 7.62x39 is a nice rifle. A friend of mine has one and has had no problems with it firing wolf ammo or any other. 8)

If that is true, it's not a bad thing at all.
However even if the spring is stronger on this model, it won't help a whole lot more if the primers are set deep. The firing pin will only extend so far. But it might just help with a few brands of ammo that just have the hard primers that are set flush. I believe that the Winchester 7.62x39 White Box, and PMC ammo isn't set as deep as say Wolf.
Though I don't have any on hand to confirm that-so I can't say it's fact. Still got plenty Silver Bear to run through.

Think I'll just continue to feed the SKS.

My Rossi 45-long colt has been promoted to "deer" rifle. the pmc 300 gr plus P ammo made a big impression last year. One shot drop on 245 pound deer. Now I'd like to try it on a Moose.  :P

Well, I got to try one before I bought it and it shot the Brown Bear Russian ammo just fine, I just shot some downrange to check function as I wanted to shoot cheap ammo in my cheap gun. I got a good deal on it too for $150 out the door and it came with the hammer extension and scope mount. I'll try it with the wolf stuff I have later one when I get a scope mounted on it. Should be a great truck gun and rainy day gun.
I may get another one in .223 since I have a stack of ammo for it.
I'll test for accuracy later.

hey hunter,
What is the frame size of the 7.62x39? Is it the same sized frame as the .357, .44, .45, .410 ect? or is it on the larger 20 guage such as the .308 30-06 and .270?
thanks

It appears to be the larger frame size.

Interesting. How many rounds where you able to pull off?
If it shoots them then I am sure that they will sell well for Rossi. Many a folk just want a inexpensive semi-high powered plinker to have some fun with. And at the same time -the biggest draw of the 7.62- cheap to shoot.
Please keep us informed as to how it shoots and to the performance of varying ammunition.

It looks like the bottom picture. Its definitely the larger frame.
I shot it at 25 yards and seems to group well. I shot some of the wolf in it and the PMC, Federal, and winchester factory loads and everything fired without a hitch. They have moved the safety lower on the frame with the lever part pointing toward the bottom. It will be a great little fun rifle to shoot and a rainy day gun that will be easier to get dry than my bolt actions or Ruger 44 carbine that I use. I'll have to test at 100 yards later on. The stock has the montecarlo and seems to be higher up for use with a scope.

This is the only report on the 7.62x39 Rossi that I have yet to read.
If , in fact, they all will shoot inexpensive ammo like Hunter6657's, then I stand corrected.
I for one hope they do.
Like I said there are more than a few that want a gun chambered for 7.62x39 than a SKS or AK. But they usually can't afford a CZ, either.
A good move for Rossi if these rifles are able to shoot the ammo.
But I fear that the press the NEF's get about the same ammo not firing will rub off on Rossi's sales in this model.
I could be wrong though, and I am curious to hear how well this model is selling.
