:i have a friend that does not have the internet. he asked me to post this question. he is wanting to buy a lyman deerstalker, for deer hunting. needs some information on this rifle. accuracy,performance reccomended loads. thanks in advance.D

I am getting about 2 1/2" groups at 80 yards using a round ball. The trick has been to use "lightly" lubed patches, 15 th pillow ticking, 70-80g of Pyrodex RS, and a .495 round ball. I use Traditions liquid Wonder lube for my patches. The best accuracy I have got fom a bullet, is from paper patched Lee Mini's, but te recoil was a little much for my arthritic shoulder. The round balls seem to work best for me, and have taken many deer from 12 feet to 110 yards. I really like this short little rifle.

The Lyman deerstalker is a 1-48 twist iron bore rifle. The groove depth is best suited for ball or full lead projectiles. I shoot a symilar rifle from cabelas,, with my own experiance and from what I have heard from others it's not really meant to be a "sabot" or plastic skirted bullet shooter.

Like Snowshoe said,, it's more than adiquate for taking Deer size game out too 100 yrds if your freind spends a little tyme with load development.

Parts for that firearm are widley available on consumer markets, and it's coilspring lock is fast and reliable.

They will also accept the Green Mountain Barrel I.B.S,,so if he want's to in the future change caliber or replace the barrel he can.. A used Deerstalker in "good" will go for around $200 I guess, in this neck of the woods! With proper care they maintain re-sale.

Thanks for the info, he is gouing to order one from midsouth, there price is $189.81 plus shipping. i was gouing to buy one, but picked up a new englander from a friend for a lot less. plus ordrerd a new inline from midway. in two days time. wife giving me the hairy eyeball.

current lyman deerstalker at midsouth shooters supply is 229.+ shipping. anyone can look it up. that's still a good price for new though

Its in the 2004 Fall Master Catolog page 47 Order No. 015-6033140 for the percussion right handed. 015-6033141 for the 54 cal percussion right handed. The first order # was for the 50 cal.

Lyman is Italian,,Cabelas markets the near same fire arm made by Lyman for over $300.. The deerstalker is much like the T/C Renegade that goes for over $400 in some venues,,

If ya look at the "big picture" and/or read the business section of the news paper,,our cost for European items across the board have gone sky high in the last year dew too "currency" exchange rates..
The "Euro" is trading high against the "dollar".(alot higher) It's got ta do with that buyin/sellin/trading stuff,,seems we'er buyin more than their sellin? er sumpthin like that. Anyways, mid-south is a big buyer,,they get really good prices because of that. I'd still trust mid-south to offer the best current cost ratio for many items including the Lyman deerstalker. Tell your freind to buy!

tell your friend to check on gunbroker - there is a guy selling the deerstalker .54 for 197.50 all day long. I doubt that price can be beaten. I would have bought from him, but I'd already gotten the cabelas version of the trade rifle in .54 - for cheap out of bargain cave. Pete - wheeling,wv.

I tried the maxiball 320 gn and found they don't shoot as accurately as the Maxiball 370.
In the past I've shot Maxihunter 350 gn without to much problem. but in the quest for better accuracy I switched to the 370's.
Now I hit about 1" high in 2 - 2 1/2 inch group at 50 yards.

I don't have access to a 100 yard range, so I don't know how'll do.
It would be nice to find out.
