Need good ramrod
« on: December 08, 2005, 02:30:06 PM »
I need a good ramrod to load tight sabots, what's best fiberglass or aluminum, and where would I find one. Any chance Gander Mtn. would carry them as I am going there friday night. I was thinking about picking up some powerbelts but after reading some problems with them being a bit loose in very cold weather I am having second thoughts. Thanks for any help.

zouave,

Kind of late me jumping in here but can ask - What gun are you shooting? what bullet/sabot combination are you shooting?

I could go a bit farther:  Are you using bullet/sabot packages?  Check the bootom of you sabot (the pressure cup) is it stepped or it smooth down the cup?

And lastly would you consider changing sabots?

It has taken me awhile but I load all of my rifles without the use of a short starter, just thumb pressure to get them down into the muzzle then ramrod for there on down...

Wolfhound's suggestion does look like a really good ram rod
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

Wolfhound, that looks like the ramrod I need, Thanks, and the price is not bad either.
Sabotloader, the rifle I just purchased is a traditions thunderbolt, the load is packaged hornady sst 300 gr. With 80 grs. goex ff I'm getting two inch groups at one hundred yards with an old weaver 4x. I just got back from Gander Mtn. where I picked up some harvester sabots which should make loading a little easier. I also got some powerbelts 295 gr. areotips to try. I'm new to inliners but have been playing around with muzzle loaders, rifles, shotguns, and pistols  for over forty years, always with black powder. Might try the pellets in the near future. As far as the rifle goes I'm happy with it, good trigger. decent groups, terrible ramrod, ends fell off third loading but then again you get what you pay for. Anyway thanks again gentlemen for your help. Happy Hunting.
