Sight considerations for hunting with a Hiwall
«

I just bought a Uberti 1885 Hiwall in 45/70. It is a beautiful gun and ameager to start loading and shooting for it. I have the full buckhorn rear sight and am wondering if I should try swapping it for a ladder sight? I plan to HUNT with this rifle as well as shoot at my range but want to keep the gun close to the period it was developed. I have seen the tang sights but question if I loose the portability(the way I carry)of the rifle with that type of sight? I wonder as to the authenticity of a ladder sight as well as losing an inch or more of sight radius over the factory buckhorn? HELP!

For my money, I would go with the mid range, soule type sight. The European sight that Buffalo Arms sells will give you infinte adustments and will still get you on targe quickly. They cost over $200, but are well worth it.

My original Winchester Hi Wall has a ladder style carbine rear sight, and it works great. I also added a midrange vernier to the tang, and so I can flip that up if I have time to take a really accurate shot.
Check these sights out. I have this one, and it works great, is very solid and tight. It doesn't have windage adjustment, but it's one heck of a sight for the price!
