my 209x50 encore drew blood this morning
« on: December 02, 2005, 01:17:53 PM »
I was late getting to my hunting spot so I was in a hurry and ended up forgetting my 2 extra speed loaders and didn't know it until I was in my stand and all set up, So I had only 1 shot and knew I had to make it count. This morning at 073 I had a small spike come to my stand to about 30 yards and gave me a shot I could not pass up. I picked up my encore and got ready the shot. once I got a clear shot I squeezed the trigger. at the shot he jumped and started to run I could see he was running very low in the front. as it ran out of sight I was listening with my pro-ears on and could hear hum go down and scratch around for a few minutes once it stopped I got down and looked where he was standing. I could not find any blood signs but I know he was dead and about where he was. I went and he was right where I thought he was, But the strange thing was he was 1/2 way under a fallen tree. The shot went high n the right shoulder and exited just behind the left shoulder and went right trough the heard
I was using 90 grs of Goex FF black powder under a Lightfield spritzer boat tail 300 gr alpha gold.

Congrats Ricky, but I didn't think it was legal to post threads regarding dead deer without posting pictures.

A regular collection of class clowns here. As I was voted class clown, I'm liking this place more and more.

Ricky,

How does that 209x50 shoot? I am really seriously considering that, as I don't black powder hunt. But it would definitely give me the ability to rifle hunt the whitetail migration routes in Northern Michigan, which I normally bow hunt.

Is it better to use the 209x50 pistol or convert my pistol to the the rifle for balck powder? Any barrel length limitations one should be aware of concnerning complete powder burn? What's the effective range of that pistol?

Hunter Mann,
We have a bunch of great people here and we have a few donkeys if you know what I mean. but they seam to not last long.
as for how well the 15 inch 209x50 shoots well it is not a tack driver but it will shoot better then enough for deer hunting. If I do my part I can get something like 2 to 3 inch groups at about 50 yards or so. while this is not great, it is more then needed for deer.

I Love hunting with handguns it gives me an extra challange, I find with shotguns, muzzle loading rifles and 22 rifles If i see an animal and decide to take it it is dead. now with a handgun it gives me a lot more of a challange, I have missed as many if not more animals then I have hit. The reason I use a muzzleloading handgun to deer hunt is, taht in the counties I hunt this is the only handgun one can use for deer hunting. I am working hard to get this changed but it is a up hill fight.

IF you want to use a muzzleloading handgun for big game hunting you must first maske sure it is legal to use where you intend to hunt> I know this sounds simple but I  know people that just went out and bought something and found out they could not use it.

as for hunting with it figure it to be in the same class as a 44 magnum or a light loaded 454. bullet selection is the key factor do not get a hullet desinged to heavy rifle loads they tend to be to strong and will not open up all the way

Where I live in Northern Michigan it's in the middle of nowhere. We still give our directions in terms over over the hill, around the bend, and turn left at the big old oak tree. Nearest neighbor is about a quarter mile away.I can use any gun I want for deer, although I am sure the DNR would frown on a cannon or bazooka.

I bought the Thompson as I figured it would give me the up close and personal aspect that I love about bow hunting....which is my true passion.

Thanks for the 209x50 info. Still trying to figure out which barrel I am buying next.....got the urge to buy something and trying to figure it into my hunting plans.

I'm not much of a range guy, unless by range you mean opening up the slider or double hung and shooting out of my bedroom. You should see the kids jump when that .270 booms from the bedroom window.

I fear I've said too much..... Man am I off subject here.

You may want to look at a 45-70 barrel

Yeah? And you might want to pick up the pieces of me that will be scattered all over the county after I touch that thing off. Brother, I'm 5'4" tall and about 135.

I can handle some recoil, but I'm a little paranoid of that caliber. I like my wrists right where they are.....still attached to my arms  :-D

Now back to seriousness....I have shot a hot 44 mag round (cute joke a buddy played on me when we were shooting light rounds and he slipped one of those into his 44 mag revolver). I think I would get a little flinch going with a 45-70....although I'm sure it would stop in a day or two.

I have an unported 15 inch 45-70 encore barrel and with full power loads using 405 gr cast bullets it is a handful I can normally shoot only about 10 rounds at a session. I think if you have a good break on it it would be a pleasure to shoot. I do know it will take anything in north America that you care to hunt  (and that is not hunting you).
I also have a 14 inch 375 JDJ and that is a fun round to shoot
