Share your opinions, thoughts, group sizes, likes & dislikes.  As always I appreciate your help.  I'm looking for a good, inexpensive deer rifle.

I have a Survivor 308 with bull barrel.  I like this rifle (except the rear stock).  The rifle shoots good groups.  I don't think you could go wrong with the 308 for deer.  Also the money you save on the rifle will let you get a good scope.

My 308 bull barrel dropped two deer in their tracks this year.  It shoots a lot better than I do.

I bought the 308 Survivor and switched the stock and forend to the Choate Varmit stock and forend. Shoot's excellent and recoil is mild with the Choate stock...........

Many of us here may have favorite deer calibers but NONE here could argue with the fact that you will not go wrong in any way by getting a Handi in .308 as your primary deer rifle!! It is up to the task no matter what species of deer you decide to hunt and no matter what section of the country you decide to hunt. It is a GREAT choice. And by the way, I don't have a Handi in .308 but have them in many other calibers. If I had to get only one rifle the versatile .308 would be right there up near the top of the list, and for a DEER rifle to do it all, especially if I did not reload, it quite possibly be my first choice!!!....<><....

Handi's have a great history in .308, accurate and trouble free. Clean it well when you get it, polish/burnish the chamber (easy!!!) and keep the chamber free of oil and I would also suggest you do a bit of research here and add Fred M's "emergency extractor notch" at the breech end of the chamber (again VERY easy). You will have possibly the best inexpensive single shot deer rifle ever made, capable of cleaning taking any deer, anywhere...Your only real question is which barrel to get, the bull barrel or the standard contour, your decision should be influenced by thinking of you strength and willingness to carry a heavy barrelled gun all day in the woods and fields or if you are a stand hunter and just sit and wait. Also will you be doing a lot of benchrest shooting or is it primarily a hunting gun where the first or perhaps first 2 bullets are what count? I myself simply prefer a regular contour barrel for hunting and a bull barrel for bench rest shooting. Remember the acronym "KISS"!!! (keep it simple stupid), it works every time..... best of luck and let us know what you do and how it works out, Merry Christmas.......

edited for spelling...

This isn't necessary if it has an extractor instead of an ejector, but is a great idea if it doesn't.

I'm courious if when I change barrels if it will still be on the money when I switch it back. Thats something I have not done yet change barrels and see if they hold there zero when reinstalled.

The 308 suvivor was the second Handi I got and I love it still. I now have 9 total and I love them all. I have been one of the lucky Handi owners, all but one of mine shot very well out of the box. I guess the that one made up for it, took me a little while to get it right but it now shoots MOA. I was at least smart enough to read and listen to the folks on this about what you needed to do before you ever put the first round in the chamber and it saved me a lot of time and head aches. The 308 has been used both as a light short, brush rifle as well as used for some bean fields. The longest shot was a nice doe at about 175 yards. 150 gr Hornady Custom factory load. hit right where I held the cross hair. Went down like a sack of taters and never moved. I use mostly leopold scopes. I was told once that you should spend more on the scope than you do on the rifle and it seems to be true. Good luck with your 308, Hope you have the luck with yours that I did with mine.

I took my Ultra 308 hunting this year and it spoke for two deer for my.  I was happy with the performance of everything but the extraction problems and bullet performance.   Bullet performance was of my own "mischosing" and the extraction issues are being worked out.

Other than that, it carries great, handles nicely, and puts 'em right where I point it.

.308 Ultra Success
« Reply #12 on: December 13, 2005, 04:39:41 AM »
Hello from Georgia,
This is the first year my new Ultra got to go hunting and it has been a HUGE sucess. My first 5 deer taken this year were with the .308 topped with a Mueller 4 x 16 x 50 Mil dot scope. I passed on several does and smaller bucks early in the season while waiting on a nice buck. I took a pretty good 8 point as the first deer with the rifle and then started adding venison to my freezer !! 3 does and a button buck (shot as a doe ?oops!)
all were taken with a single shot from a single shot ! Good Hunting !

My .308 has done pretty well with factory loads, but was very fickle with handloads.  In fact, it didn't like a lot of the powders I tried in it, including Varget and BL(C)-2 behind 150-165gr bullets.  But, like I said, it did well with most of the factory loads I tried in it, including Remingto 150gr core-lokts.

I had an older H&R Handi in .308 I wish I never would have traded.  It had a cheap Bushnell scope and would shoot under 1" groups with almost any factory ammo.  Reloads would group 1/2" to 3/4" groups at 100 yards.

What was I thinking?
