Author Topic: Who has a 358 Lever rifle (Read 1157 times)

Has anyone here made this conversion yet? I remember the misinformation that was written about this cartridge and the saftey of it in the Marlin rifles I think it was. I just sounds so unique I'm still wondering (wishing) about it. I hear about a few out there but don't know of any personally. I did briefly follow up on the prior post on this and the gunsmith we all know said it is fine and he would do it. but I hate to go ahead without a little idea of what to expect.
Pressures check out, the brass volume of the 356 and 358 are identical so the brass strength wasn't an issue as suggested. The case walls between the brass are the same thickness with the only difference between the two was rim vr. rimless and bullet seating depth. It was a logistics problem rather than a "danger" problem that was cited by the moderator at the time. I remember thinking it sounded like the 307 modification s considerations. I just like the idea of having a 35 caliber Winchester or Marlin that out runs the 35 Remington by a mile. Kind of a sit around the campfire converstion piece. There were some others interested in this and I wonder if they went forward on it. any information on this will be greatly appreciated. thanks

Well? No one has converted the 35 Rem. Marlin to a 356? You're gonna make me do it yet aren't you :lol: realidahorock

Well? It's been over a month. Did you convert a 35 Remington to 356? Why not just get a 358 Winchester lever and outrun both the 35 Remington and 356?

I have a browning blr in 358. Just buy one of these they are very nice rifles,and because of the box magazine you can use pointed bullets safely. Actually I have 4 blr's. 1 358 and 3 308's. I am currently having one of the 308's rebarreled to 260. Regards, Byron

Now this sounds very interesting!
I was wondering about a 243 win
or 7-08 rebarrel. Is the OAL of the
260 rem due to the long bullets
something that needs to be accounted for?

PK, no need to rebarrel a BLR for .243 or 7mm-08. Just go to the shop and get one out of the box. Since they also come in .308 and .358, the only '08 cases missing from the factory rounds are the .260 and .338 Fed (for now).
Personally, I think it is asinine and shows little regard for the safety of others (never mind yourself) to take a rifle designed and proofed to operate at 42,000 p.s.i. (not CUP) and rechamber for a cartridge that operates at 62,000 p.s.i. (also not CUP). I fail to see the thrill in firing what amounts to a proof load every time I touch the trigger, when for about the same price as a Marlin and a gunsmithing bill, you can get a perfectly safe BLR.
Everyone also needs to consider who will be liable when you get tired of your new toy and sell it. Sometime down the road, some non-handloading city dude, who bought it third hand out of the newspaper, is going to drop a couple of sharp pointed factory rounds down that tube magazine and drop the hammer. Guess who his family is going to have the investigator trace down to pay city dude's surgical bills PLUS pain, suffering and attorney's fees (both attorneys)

Sorry I was not clear. What I meant was rebarrelling
a 243 or 7-08 BLR to a 260 rem.
