Ruger Ranch bullet wt.
« on: December 03, 2005, 01:29:25 PM »
I'm new to the forum, and new to .223 shooting.

I'll be using a Ruger Ranch ( I know the reputation on accuracy). In the thick woods of N. man going after fox and ravens and sometimes a coyote that are lurking in the woods for a lunch on the farm stock, I figure this will work.

Most shots will not exceed 200 yds. I have not found out what  the twist is. Q. What weight bullet for bang flop? At this point I want dead, not pelt sales.

Q. What style of bullet for accuracy & kill?

I would like to limit the types of ammo on hand for just one rifle.

Thank you,

The shepard

I use Nosler’s 50 or 55 gr. Varmint Ballistic Tips in my custom Mini-14(groups well under MOA).  They just seem to give me the best accuracy and performance on varmints as long as you’re not saving pelts.  No matter what any other shooters say I like you choice of the Ruger Ranch.  If you don’t get the accuracy you are looking for, drop me a PM here and I’ll give you all the help I can with load information or whatever it takes to get that Ranch up shooting to your satisfaction.  Lawdog

Lawdog, Thanks!

Right now, I'm not reloading. Have done so in the past.  If I get back into it, I need a new powder measure and .223 dies. I use a Rock Chucker.

For the present , I'll be buying ammo --- probably Black Hills.

I don't receive the weapon till Dec. 25 --- big surprize!!!!!!

Thanks for the input.
Been doing some research on purchased .223 ammo (for the Ruger Ranch)--- seems like E. of the Mississippi the favorite is Winchester Supreme 55 gr.Ballistic Silvertip.
West of the Mississippi seems like purchased ammo the favorite is  the Black Hills rounds ( 52 gr. match hollow point,& 50 gr.Hornady V-Max).
Black Hills comes in new and once fired brass. The price runs between .292 cents, .385 cents, .455 cents per round in boxes of 50 at the factory.
My nearest source at 15 mile is the local hadware and they handle only Remington 55 gr. PSP at .685 cents per round. My next source is a 70 mile round trip and they are a small shop with limited selections.  After that it is a 200 mile round trip to get a choice on ammo.  Thus I will be ordering some. Have shearing and lambing coming up soon, so reloading wouldn't be till next winter.

While looking up material I ran across a butt pouch for a 20 or 30 round clip at Bush Master.  It is made in the state of Wash.

I think in the long run the Black Hills ammo is the most cansistent and seems to work pretty good in the ranch rifle. For the job you want it to do you shouldent have any trouble, Good luck...........Joe............
