No. 3 hog falls to 445
« on: December 12, 2005, 02:36:19 PM »
Well the 445 made some more meat this evening. The shot was about 120 yds. and it entered the left hindquarter breaking the leg and exited the right front shoulder breaking it also. It was so dark in the area that he was in that I could'nt tell which way he was standing,but I shot anyway.The  265 gr. Hornady traveled nearly 30" breaking leg bones on both ends. My old back said he was at least 150 pds. fieldressed. I made a call and had someone wanting it in a flash. It's alot more fun when you can give them away and not have to cut them up yourself. :grin:  :grin:  :grin: Digger

Hey Digger;

What ever became of John's (like2hunt) 445? You know I sold him the 44 barrel, I just haven't seen any of his posts about it. But then again, I was without a computer for over two months.
Congrats on No.3 hog.

good job on the HOG

what load were you using with the 265gr Hornady bullet?that bullet is a very tuff bullet for sure.

how fast are you pushing it?

I'm not sure about the load but I think it was 31.5 or 32 grs. of 296 and it goes through the chrono at 2146 fps. Not much expansion but plenty of penatration. I think I'm going to try the 240 gr. Rem soft point next. Digger

i was thinking about the Remington 240gr soft point too.i didnt like the results of the Remington 240 JHP bullet as it blewup when it hit the buck i shot with it.the 240gr soft point might be better.the 240gr Hornady XTP worked out good too for me with a max load of 296 on the doe i shot with it.the XTP held together and showed signs of expansion.you might want to try that one too

Dennis my 445 hasn't made anything but a big BOOM yet. Of course I'm not as active (i.e., semi-retired :grin:) as my friend Digger either so I don't get to go out as much as he does. Working 10-12 hours per day will kinda put the brakes on the hunting time ya know. I actually found a great deal on a brand new 44 Mag right after I bought yours. So I got it and Ebayed yours. Came out pretty good on the deal BTW. I thought I had PM'ed ya and told ya the whole story but it musta got lost in my brain somewhere. Good intentions vs. actual follow-thru, if ya know what I mean.
My 445 is shooting about 1/2" at 50 yards right now with Diggers 32.5gr. over a Hornady 265 load. Haven't really had a chance to hone it in much more than that. I have changed receivers and lightened the stock some and will hopefully get some range time soon and then, even more hopefully, some HOG time.

I watched my friend skin the hog the next day and recovered the 265 gr. bullet. It had mushroomed to .7" and weighed 251 grs.We measured how far the bullet had traveled in the hog and it was 37". I lazered the distance and it was 136 yds. I think its time to try the 300's now at 1977 fps.  and  see how the XTP's do.  Digger

:D  Hi Digger,  :D  Hey Digger, sounds as if your having a great time! Who is this un-named friend of yours who is willing to rush out at any time and take all those shot up hogs? Does he field dress them and then skin them the next day also? Boy does he sound like one great guy, I think you should buy him a nice big Christmas present. The only thing you need him to do now is lead you to those hogs and he would sound like one great hunting partner, just think if he could either retrieve or cook and then do the dishes afterwards!! Be still my heart :-D  :-D .
If you want to keep this guys name a secret I can understand, but could I borrow him for a few days or a month or so next hunting season?
By the way, Mitchell's idea of you sending him a few ribs sounds great, just in case you have a few pounds left over...Merry Christmas to you and your "secret friend" from this frozen over sandspit they call Cape Cod....<><.... :grin:
