Schumer Calls for Improved Gun Database Sen. Charles Schumer is calling for an improved gun database -- following the death last week of NYPD officer Dillon Stewart, who was shot with a stolen gun.
Schumer says he wants all states to be required to report stolen guns and guns involved in crimes to a nationwide database. Right now, only about 25 states voluntarily report such weapons.
Speaking at a press conference Sunday, the senator also proposed sentencing convicted drug traffickers to 20 years in prison -- up from the 10 years they face now.
Of the illegal guns recovered in New York City between 1988 and 2003, Schumer said, 92 percent were from out of state.
Patrolmen's Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch appeared with Schumer, calling the changes "mandatory.''
The wake for Stewart will be held Monday.

What a guy.
