.470 Nitro Express
« on: December 02, 2005, 11:00:12 AM »
I tried this on the AR forum with no replies so far so i thought i would try it hear. Federal loads the 470 with a 500grain bullet at 2150 fps. so i sent them an e-mail asking them if this load was at or below the saami specs of 35,000 psi.  I got 35,000 from two different saami charts that i have. One is from lever guns .com not sure where the other chart came from . They e-mail me back stating that the saami specs for the 470 nitro express was 41,000 psi and that there load was  at around 38,000psi. So my question is is there a revised saami chart out there that i dont have? Does anyone have a chart showing the saami specs for the 470? Thanks Tanoose

Thats one of the charts i have the other i got from leverguns .com if it is indeed 35,000 then that would mean Federal is loading above saami specs . And like i said in the above post they state the saami specs are 41,000 Have companies ever loaded above saami specs before or do you think they were incorrect in there e-mail. Maybe i'll send them another e-mail on the subject Later Tanoose

This has caused lots of mix ups over the years, As long as a person knows to watch for the different pressure rating he will be ok. Good luck

Federal uses a special primer for their .470 loads. This primer was designed by Federal for use in their .470 loads. They use a faster burning powder than usual, and the case is not full.
Most of the reloaders for Nitro's, including myself, like to use a slow burning powder-ie. 4831, and full cases in straight-walled versions.
In the bottle-necks, usually, most always, there is some sort of filler used, either dacron, or foam, felt, etc., especially with RL-15.
But Federal uses no filler.
No filler, faster powder, and special primer, always made me wonder about Federal pressures, and what their motives are concerning all of this.
I have wondered why they could not load it like everyone else does.
Perhaps they just wanted to do it THEIR way.
But, cases that are not full, either with powder or helped out by filler, scare me.
It is possible that their loading could have slightly more pressure, but I don't know. Either way, they have kept it acceptable for all guns.
As for me, I'm never going to use them. I don't have a .470, but a .450.
But if I had a .470-I never liked nickle-plated cases anyway, so that fact alone would turn me off from them.hehe
But yes, for the .470, a filler is usually needed, but Federal uses none, and a special primer.
At least this is what I've heard, as I've not tried them.
Hope this helps.
