Federal uses a special primer for their .470 loads. This primer was designed by Federal for use in their .470 loads. They use a faster burning powder than usual, and the case is not full.
Most of the reloaders for Nitro's, including myself, like to use a slow burning powder-ie. 4831, and full cases in straight-walled versions.
In the bottle-necks, usually, most always, there is some sort of filler used, either dacron, or foam, felt, etc., especially with RL-15.
But Federal uses no filler.
No filler, faster powder, and special primer, always made me wonder about Federal pressures, and what their motives are concerning all of this.
I have wondered why they could not load it like everyone else does.
Perhaps they just wanted to do it THEIR way.
But, cases that are not full, either with powder or helped out by filler, scare me.
It is possible that their loading could have slightly more pressure, but I don't know. Either way, they have kept it acceptable for all guns.
As for me, I'm never going to use them. I don't have a .470, but a .450.
But if I had a .470-I never liked nickle-plated cases anyway, so that fact alone would turn me off from them.hehe
But yes, for the .470, a filler is usually needed, but Federal uses none, and a special primer.
At least this is what I've heard, as I've not tried them.
Hope this helps.
