I found a lyman trade rifle in 54 and wold like to get it but not sure of the reliability price is around $270 it's only had a few shots tru it and looks to be in great shape any help would be apreciated as I have zero flintlock experiance!yottey

Boy, that's a tuff call yottey. 270 is border-line fer used.
The Lyman made guns are good. Parts for most common repairs are easily available..But for a new shooter to BP,,,,and it being a rock tosser with a 1-48 twist,,,,WELL?? :oops: if your ready to put some time into it,,,and do your part of the study and shores too learn,,,yer gonna havta harden the frizzen and or find the proper rocks for the jaws,,,,that's a gimme,,,,then load development and patch and lube established,,,after that you can adjust the sights.((270$? or $319+S/H new?))

Not new to smokepoles have a 12 gauge,28 gauge, 2-inlinrs and 4-sidelocks;but have thought about getting into flint gun since the 70s.I looked the gun over well bore and outside look new only thing that looks used is the frizen.I have been looking at track of the wolf kits but just didn't want to get in that deep in time and money till I find out if I like flint guns or not.yottey

Yottey, best buy is a Cabela`s Traditional Hawken Flinter for under $300. Buy it new with warranty and it is well made. Jack.

Sparking shouldn't be a problem with a Lyman. My Great Plains has been excellent on ignition. My father's Lyman Deerstalker had some problems with ignition with hang fires or misfires. We drilled out the touch-hole liner a bit (5/64" bit) and that reduced but didn't eliminate it. Switching to 3F Swiss powder from 2F Goex seemed to completely fix the problem in a short range session. I just picked up a touch hole liner from RMC Sports that is coned on the inside but haven't tried it yet.

The Deerstalker and Trade Rifle have a single trigger. The one his Deerstalker is pretty heavy ... I prefer the double set trigger on the Great Plains. Make sure the lock is properly inletted up to the barrel. If there is a gap, priming powder could get down in there. Might need to remove just a little wood behind the lock to fix.

Despite these possible little problems, I don't think you'll find a better production flintlock than the Lyman or a better value. If you get one and run into problems, the good folks on these boards can help you troubleshoot.

Thanks for the help guys! I have decided to shop around a bit and might just wait tell I have the extra cash to order from track of the wolf one of rhe kits and put a bunch of time into a nice kit gun!yottey
still might concider great plains rifle in flint for a starter

I don't have any experience with gun building but my readings tell me that the skill level and work varies greatly among the kits. I believe a Tracks kit would be among the more involved projects. I would not consider it a starter project but it depends on your skill level and experience. Tracks can do some of the tougher parts if you like.

You should read through the builders section of www.muzzleloadingforum.com before deciding on the Tracks kit.

Also, the Lyman Great Plains is available as a relatively simple kit. If you don't have much gun building experience, it would be worthwhile starting with something you can't screw up too much to see if you really want to build a more complicated project. Info on the kits are found in the Lyman user manual (covers all their sidelocks). This is available online in Adobe Acrobat PDF file.

The kit end of it doesn't worry me !I worked for 3 years as a repair welder and 2 years of machine shop in highschool plus over 20 years as a finnish carpenter,I also built a few custom mausers over the years.About the only thing I dont have any experiance with is hardening parts,I do have plenty of extra hours to put into one so time isn't a factor if it takes 2 years to get it right I have no problem with that!I found a TC hawken priced real right to play with in the mean time,yottey
