444 Marlin rebarrel a possibility?
« on: December 10, 2005, 04:07:16 PM »
I see some NEF info on the 444 Marlin.  Is that currently a rebarrel possibility with a SB-2 frame?

I don't see it on the website info.

Thanks.

You can rechamber a 44 Mag barrel to 444 Marlin and have the same barrel the factory once sold, or you can rechamber to 445 Super Mag (445 SM) and have 85-90% of 444 Marlin performance for a half the recoil. Either way, you can have what you are seeking, it just requires a rechamber of an existing barrel.

KLA, If you have the time, do a search for .445 Super Mag threads. Some of the info posted by Ditchdigger and others may impress you. It sure did impress me cause now I'm a .445 Super Mag owner. It's a simple rechamber that can be done by hand. One of the members (jeff223) has the reamer and rents it out for 15 bucks.

But if the only the .444 Marlin will do, take it to a smith, or be on the lookout for a used Handi or a barrel.

You are getting some good advice here from JHP45 and .308.

I too was in on the 445 Super Mag re-chamber project and am VERY pleased with the results.  It will indeed to about 90% of what the 444 will do and you can still shoot 44 special and 44 mag out of the same barrel.

It's WELL worth the $15 to rent the reamer from Jeff.

Just some questions about the 445 super mag:

Are dies readily available
Is brass readily available
Does this caliber shoot the same bullet weights about the same as the 444

Thanks for the info

Kla,you use 44 mag dies for the 445,my RCBS dies work perfect on the 445 brass that you can get from Midway. Most of us are getting 2150 fps with the 265 gr. Hornady in the rifle barrel and 296. Also you can still shoot the 44 mag.and 44 spl. .  Digger

Yeah, I forgot to mention something very important. You can still shoot .44 Mags and Specials in a .445 Super Mag. But I see Jerry and Digger didn't forget to mention that. :) So, there you go. If you have a .444 Marlin, all you have is a .444 Marlin. The other way you have a .44 Spl., a .44 Mag., and a .445 Super Mag. and all for the low, low price of 15 bucks. 8) Not a bad deal, IMO.
