got bitten
« on: August 09, 2006, 05:37:39 AM »
i'm new to this fourm but not to g- beards, here in delaware we have a over run of foxes and ground hogs, most of the time we take them out during muzzle loader or shot gun season but that can get expensive, i started carrying my henry survival 22lr and put it in my tree stand which is alot of fun when most foxes get inside 50 yards, but now i have a henry lever 22 mag and really love it !!! the longest shot i've taken was on a small fox at 207 yards and rolled him on the spot, i have a nc-star 3x9x42 mounted and simply love this rig, i know most people on this fourm have bigger and better toy's but for what i can afford i still get big grins. but reading some past post's i have'nt seen much or any on the 22 mag, is it a ok round ? or is it to small for what most people use most of my shooting is under 200 yards and i'm now got the bug.

od green.

I will echo what Onecoyote said and go a step farther, You  Might stretch the barrel on your 22  mag. making the long range shots. As long as you are making good shots and having a good time without crippling animals and causing them  to go off and die. I salute you sir............Joe...........

That .22 WMR does get attention but I haven't seen any post for a while.
When the .17HMR came out the general thought seemed to be that if you already owned a .22WMR
To just keep using it as it is probably equal or superior with those 40gr bullets @ 1,800+fps.

The .22 WMR works great on 100-150yd groundhogs and I have taken several Fox with mine.
I actually took my first coyote with this round but was an eye opener as it was just 27yds away.
Mediocre calling coupled with varmints that would (hang up) as far as 200yds in those days was a good reason for me to go with my first centerfire.

I do agree with onecoyte and oso45-70 as the 200yd mark is getting to be a long poke. Might be ok with Good Shot Placement as you witnessed but your muzzle energy at that range is under 100ft lbs.
This might be ok providing you are getting good shot placement and consistant kills.

I also agree that 207 was a bit farther than i would try to push the shot, i had origonally gusstomated it to be close to 100-150 and had to go back to camp to get the range finder. now when i go the range finder goes with me. i normally try for closer is better and have been practing at longer ranges but would i or could i take that shot again i don't think so, but now i know what the round is capable of, but my skills are what i need to work on, also i use these guns as my truck/tractor go to. thanks for the advice
