Stock refinishing, what color?
« on: December 11, 2005, 03:25:24 PM »
Cherry, Mohogany, Oak, Americana (whatever that is?)?  What is the best color stain for redoing a Handi Rifle stock?  Not interested in camo or black.  Thanks for any input.

My son sanded his down and rubbed linseed oil into the wood.  Left it unstained.  Looks nice, sort of blond color, with lots of grain showing.  I like it, so does he.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Sourdough
Yes that is what I like, nothing like natural wood. I like the Tru-Oil finish it is clear and brings out the grain.

Making a wood stock beautiful is extreamly rewarding...I use a combination of 3 different colors for my stocks...Cherry...Mahogany..and Walnut..then many many many coats of Tru-oil....it comes out looking like this...

Thanks guys.  I would sort of like a little darker stock, similar to Mac11700's.

Mac, that obviously isn't the original stock, and I presume it is a different grade of wood.  Is that correct?  I haven't actually sanded my stock yet since deer season isn't over here yet, but I was wondering what kind of grain can be seen with the original "paddlewood" stocks on the NEF?

Sourdough and Fred, do you happen to have a picture of what your turned out like?

I have heard good things abouit Arrow's wood finishing, but haven't tried it yet.

Your right..it is a custom stock from Gunstocks Inc...I don't have any pictures of the Pallet woods to show you...haven't done one for a long time...but I did use this coloration on a few of them ...and they turned out real nice...on those  I had 20-25 coats of Tung Oil on them..so theyreally glowed...
