Mauser K98 with ATI synthetic stock.
« on: November 10, 2005, 06:42:23 PM »
I got a catolog from centerfire systems inc in the mail the other day. Don't know how they got my address, but hey what the hell. I started to page through it, and found they sell a bunch of different items including firearms. On page 14 they were selling a Mauser K98 with ATI synthetic stock, and built-in scope rail. I nearly lost it when I saw the price... Reduced $149.97. I went to my local gun shop, and showed them the ad. They had the same ad, and called them to make sure this was the real deal. And sure enough it was. I told him to order me up one asap. I should receive it next thurs or fri.

Anyone else own a Mauser K98? How do they shoot? From what I read on the website the mauser action is one of the best bolt-actions period.

I have a M48A and a M24/47 and love them, don't know about the aftermarket stocks. The rifle will more likely be a 48 action, just a model type of the 98 made in Yugo I believe.

I live not too far from Centerfire Systems and was there one day and someone else was looking at the rifle you are referring too.  I didn't examine the rifle closely but from what I saw it looked ok.  Thought about buying one myself.

My K98 mauser showed up at my local gun shop yesterday. I couldn't of been more pleased. The ATI stock looks awesome. The rifle itself is in amazingly great shape too. Clean action, no rust in barrel, smooth bore, very well maintained concidering how old it is.

Took it home, and shot a couple rounds of federal 170 grain bullets. Didn't have any issues with misfires, jams, or feeding.

For being my first military rifle I'm totally excited.

I have wondered about these as the scope rail is not directly fastened to the reciever or the barrel but is part of the stock its self. I would think that would tend to loose zero . I know that is what my gunsmith seems to think about them. I would tend to agree. Might be ok if you can keep the top part of the stock in the same place all the time. Be interested to see how it shoots over a period of time. Just going out once and saying it kept zero would not be enough you would have to shoot it for a while and see what it did.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

From memory the ATI stocks clamp onto the barrel.
On that basis I'd be surprised if they lost zero easily.
But they mount the scope really high and may affect accuracy.
I'm also skeptical of how hardy to the stock actually is.
Maybe you can keep us up to date on this.

I havn't mounted any optics on my mauser so I don't know how well the mount would be. I've gotten pretty good shooting with open sights. I ordered a russian M-44 from centerfire systems  last friday witch should be here this week. I'm also looking at a Yugo M48 mauser that my local gun shop has. All orginal, stock isn't too bad, action and barrel are good. He asking $155 for it, but I'm going to see if I can't talk him down in price.
