Type 38 japanese bottom metal

I've got a type 38 sporter in .308 on layaway.  I want to change the bolt handle and stock.  The stock is the original, slimmed too much, with a spliced, ugly pistol grip extension.  It's realy ugly!

Thebottom metal is modified from the original, but it still has the part that extends way past the trigger guard, along the stock.

Does anyone have pics of sporters and how this area was handled?

I think I'll cut off the extension and file it round.

Those are tang extensions and there is one on top as well as the bottom. When you disassemble the rifle you can remove them, no need to saw. Many people discard them when sporterizing with a new stock. The Japanese put them there to strengthen the grip as that is the thinest part of the wood. The work well for that purpose, you seldom see an original with a broken stock at that location.
