So, is there a right way to fireform??

I have searched this site over, as well as quite a few others, and I have yet to find a consistent method for fireforming cartridges.   I have seen recommendations for Cream of Wheat, starting loads with light bullets, and even wax over a full case of Bullseye.  

I've also been told that the only way to properly fireform a cartridge is by seating a bullet in the lands and using a nice starting load of powder for the bullet wieght.  

I am forming some more 7mm TCU brass, and have been forming by simply using starting loads with various bullet weights.  Do I need to seat a bullet in the lands to properly fireform a piece of brass, or is there an easier way?

I had a suggestion from a friend that I try a ball of cotton over 10 gr. of Unique as a starting point, and adjust up or down as needed. I haven't gotten to try it yet but I will. I had another suggestion from another friend to use a bar of soap and I don't recall the powder charge right now, but stick the case in the soap 'til it stops it up. I'll give that a try too, and save money on bullets that way too.

Jason, the method for fireforming varies by cartridge and individual gun. The main requirement is that the case head must be held solidly against the bolt or breech face. I do not load 7 mm TCU and cannot speak specifically to that cartridge.

For the rimless wildcats that I have loaded for, I expand the case necks larger than the cartridge I am making and size back down with the wildcat dies until I have a crush fit in that rifle. I then load with a moderate charge and an appropriate weight bullet and shoot.

There have been times I could simplify this. I was shooting a .35 Whelen back when it was a wildcat  and only needed to expand necks, load and shoot. The Whelen kept the shoulder of the parent .30-06 and I had a good tight chamber. No real fireforming was needed.
