Diameter of a M98 barrel shank?
« on: December 10, 2005, 02:22:08 AM »
A friend has a 21" 7mm barrel rough chambered to 7x57 and threaded for an M98 action that he is not using.
I was wondering if the shank is large enough to be re-threaded for use on a large frame Martini.
The idea would be to have it re-chambered either to 7x57R or 7x65R.
That of course would also involve having it cut for the extractor but that's easy enough.
A Martini Enfield has a 1" barrel shank from the top of the thread.
Would there be enough metal left on a M98 barrel?

The M98 uses a 1.1 inch major thread diameter at 12 TPI amd a bit over .62 inches long. It should work OK but I'm working fomr memory and it surely is not to good.

Gunnut69,

There is nothing wrong with your memory.  The Mauser 98 shank is indeed 1.1" diameter, and YES, it can be rethreaded to fit a Martini-Henry or Martini-Enfield action.  A gunsmith I know did just that with no problems.
