helpmeeeeeeeeeee!?
« on: January 01, 2006, 03:46:00 PM »
Rewarded myself with two Ultras for Christmass [Ultra 25/06 and Ultra Varmint  Fluted in 223Rem] and a Topper deluxe Classic in 12ga. I already have a Buffalo Rifle in 45/70.
Soooooooo, questions??
1. Ultra 25/06 should be 1 in 10 twist, right?  the feel of the weapon is good I like its weight, while not a heavy barrel the barrel is heavier than other 25/06s I've seen; equipped it with a 24X44 Simmons, what's a really snotty[submoa] load for it?
2. Ultra fluted 223 Rem, what's the twist 1in9, bought the weapon the 2nd week of Dec. did H/R change the twist to 1 in 9 for '06.  I would really like to step up to the 80 gr. Sierras or the 77 gr. A Max from Hornady.  I mounted a BSA Platinum 824x44MDIR after reading a gunsmith's report on the optics.
3. Buffalo Rifle 45/70,a beauty.  It is a heavy recoiling rifle, but then most 45/70s are; I'll just have to develop a work around, perhaps beebeebees in the "butt".  The twist is it 1 in 18 or 1 in 20?
Bullet?
500 gr. Postell Lyman 457125? or
535 gr. Postell Lyman 457132? or
Lee 500 gr. Postell?  ll are four band bullets with the three grease grooves
I've changed the sights to Pedersoli Soule sight sets for long range, am planning to go to the "Quigley" in June, need some good poop and skinny.
By way of background, I'm a long range rifelman myself my idea of short range is 600yards, my rifle of preference rifle is a 30/06 Ackley imrpoved on a Savage 110 action frozen up for single shot bedded in a Cloward prone stock, with a straight taper 1.15" barrel.  Load is a 190 gr. Sierra MatchKing at 2800ft/ps.
The "Buffalo" is new to me, so any help is appreciated.

1. try a 100 grain smk with RL-22 . my ground hog shooting partner uses this load in his and shoots great.

2. from what i've read all 223 fluted barrels are 1 in 9 twist (will make sure tomorrow when i pick mine up) . from what i've heard the 1-9 isn't fast enough for the 80 smk and the 77 is probably pushing it, but the 69 should work .

3. i can't help you too much with the 45-70 the only load i played with was a 300 grain remington and a trapdoor load of IMR 3031 . but it was like calling in artillery on ground hogs .
curiosity killed the cat , but i was lead suspect for a while
