New Guy - New Savage Mod.111 package
« on: October 05, 2005, 02:23:30 PM »
Hi All: A couple of day ago I was in a local store (BiMart) looking for a .308 or .270 to go Elk Hunting with my son. Out here in Washington
State they get pretty good size. I was about ready to go when the clerk
looking in his book and said they had the Savage Mod. 111 package
deal in .270 going for $299.00. Told him I'd like to look at it and he brought one down - well folks - love at first sight.
I had a nylon stock and came with a 3to9x40 scope. Needless to say, I
bought it on the spot.
Took it out today, and sighted it in. It was shooting pretty far to the right with the Remington 130gr Core-Lokt rounds. Brought the sight in to the left and got something resembling a group at 100yds. High and still a little to the right. I had a box of Remington Core-Lokt 150gr bullets with me and the guy shooting next to me said his Mod.111 prefered the 150gr bullets - so I gave it a try. Without moving the sights, I fired off my first shot and put it "dead-center-bull". My next shot was about 1/2 inch below it. I think this rifle will shoot better than I can (in fact, I know it   .)
All the material I've been reading refers to the 130gr bullets as a good hunting round for deer etc... but this thing really likes the Rem. !50gr buggers. I was planning on reloading for this round to try and see if I could work up a good round for it - but - with this kind of accuracy with a factory bullet do I really need to bother?
Has anyone else had this experience with the Savage in .270????

I have a model 110 (wood stock)  It will shoot just about anything I put in it under 1.5 inches.  Amazingly enough the 150 gr Winchester power points (cheap gray box) shoot around 0.75 inches.  Not too bad for a sporter weight "cheap" rifle.  I'm not a big handloader, but I don't see a need to handload for mine.  Good rifle, great accuracy.  You made a good choice, and it sounds like you got a good deal, too.  Have fun! :D

Rem35 - Thanks for the reply. I hadn't thought about the grey boxed Winchesters, have just tried the Remington Core-lokt stuff so far.
I think Wal-Mart and maybe Big-5 carry the Win in the grey box so will have to do some looking tomorrow. My son wants to check the scope on his .300 Winmag friday and might just have to let him try the .270 (with the cheap ammo - good stuff is for me  :) .

.30-06

Just bought a Savage package gun in .30-06 at Walmart. Wanted something in-expensive for rainy day hunts..... I already have a Model 10FP in .223 that shoots 1/2" groups all day. Anyway, had time to sight in the .30-06 today. Used 150gr Winchester power points (cheap), and the thing is awesome. Put six shots in a quarter sized group at 100 and a three shot group at 200 in the same quarter.  Savage rifles are plain awesome......

My 110 in .270 likes the Winchester better than the Remington, also. Inexpensive ammo, but it will put a deer down. I use it in my 25-06 and 30-06, too.

Savage 111 in Africa

Just read your post.  While you were writing it, my son and I were in South Africa hunting plains game.  I used my Savage 111 in 300 Win Mag.  One shot kills on everything. Mountain Reedbuck, Blue Wildebeest, Blessbok, Hartebeest, Springbok, Impala and Wart hog.  Can't beat it for the price.  Enjoy yours!

I love mine in 22-250, it shoots alot better than I can!  I wouldn't reload for it unless you just enjoy reloading.  Alot of deer are killed with them Core-Lokts every year and your gun seems to like them 150's.  I shoot the 150 grain bullets out of my Browning .270 and they shoot right there with the 130's at practical ranges and will drop a deer stone dead with a shoulder shot.

Well the rifle lived up to it's reputation, lets hope the scope don't do the same. Normally, I'm opposed to 150s in the .270, why make a 7mm Mauser out of it? But, who am I to argue with your rifle.   I've seen those Rooseveldt elk, and you're right, they git mighty big.  :D
