Good Mild .44 Mag Load- My First Handload
« on: November 29, 2005, 05:08:31 PM »
Hi all, I got most of my stuff for my start into reloading and have beeen doing tons of reading and research. Thank you for your help. Any way I want to start out with a good lighter .44 mag load. I think after reviewing my manuel I will start out with a 240gr Laser Cast FP over 10grs of Unique. This should give me about 1000fps out of my 8 3/8" barrel I belive. Any other sugestions? Is the Laser Cast cast bullet any good? Also is the standard roll crimp in my RCBS carbide seating die enough crimp for this load or should I invest in a special crimping die?
Thanks again and God Bless

Biscuits - that is an old and very well thought of load for the 44 magnum.  It is accurate and easy to shoot.  It is a great load to start with and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

A correctly applied crimp or the standard roll crimp imparted by the seating/crimping die should be more than adequate for this loading.  I have come to understand that the Laser Cast Bullets are good products.  Enjoy and HTH.  Mikey.

Biscuits,

Many, many, many years ago, I started using Unique with my very first 357 Magnum loads.  Over 30 years later, I still have that same canister of Unique.  Yet, a million reloaders can’t be wrong with the greatness of Unique, I just never found it to be that way!!!  And so it goes…

I shoot the RCBS 44-250-K bullet that weighs in at around 260 grains.  Green Dot is my powder of choice.  Seven to 8.0 grains of this powder gives right at the 1000 fps from my Ruger SRH in 9.5” barrel.  Accuracy is great at 50 yards with the ‘scoped SRH.  I think Green Dot may be a sleeper when it comes to the 44 Magnum.  You will get 1000 loads from the Green Dot as opposed to 700 with the Unique--just a thought.

If you have a canister of the Green Dot available, give it a try.  Maybe a fellow reloader might have some for you to try before purchasing a pound of it.  But then again, the Unique may work perfectly for you!  Good-luck…BCB
