Author Topic: Question for Quick, 1100 and Fred.. (Read 605 times)

..Perhaps I'm asking of a partisan group...but I have to post somewhere..

I'm planning on calling coyotes this winter; since they have become a real problem around here (rural western NY)..and are larger than the western variety.
Rarely will I get a shot over 300 yds because of the hilly territory (Alleghenys)..
I have been debating with myself between a .22 mag and the NEF in .204 Ruger..

I am aware that the mag is maxed out at about 100 yds..but does offer a quicker second shot, in case of a double...but then the NEF (almost as fast to reload as a bolt) gives me a couple hundred extra yards to reload...

Any advice ?

I'm not any of them there guys :-D , but I would go 223, 204, 22-250, and 243, for yotes. I got my first with my 243 Handi while deer hunting a couple of weeks ago.

Ranges can vary for calling yotes...I've had them come in from a few feet...to halting their approach out to several hundred away... Your initial set up location will determine your longest shot,and even though it is hilly country...you can always have long shots in valleys...or across open hillsides to the other side...I have only had 1 22 mag rifle in my life...and it was a good shooting gun but I never coyote hunted with it..and I haven't taken anything with the 204 since I don't own one yet...I have taken plenty of coyote's with the 30-06,270 and with the 30-30...I wasn't after the pelts per say...so I would go for head shots on them..Those that do go after the pelts...use something like a 22 hornet...222 Remington...223 so the entrance hole is very small and it usually doesn't exit.I'm sure the new Hummer's and the 204 will work very nicely as would the 22-250 for doing this...and would be my choice over the 22 mag...

Not that I've done any calling yet, I've read a lot about it and plan on trying it myself, have an E-caller, just not the opportunity yet.....Of the 2 you mention, the .204 would be the best choice for me, the 22mag doesn't do much for me and would limit your range. The .204 is real fur friendly if you're planning on selling hides, usually you'll get a small entrance and no exit, depending on bullet choice. Silverfox at PredatorMasters uses the .204 for yotes and is quite happy with it. .204 Handis and Ultras are gonna be extractors, so it may not be as fast as you'd like, so keep that in mind. You may still be able to order an ejector barrel, though, supposedly if you ask when you order.

Extractors are as fast as ejectors once you get the technique down. Pivot the barrels up and the butt down as you are hitting the latch. Extractor starts the cases and gravity drops them free.

I thought so too, works fine on my .22-250, but not on my .204 Ruger, it will take a little honing on some of em to allow the extractor to release the spent case completely, it stays against the spent case at full travel.

Out to 300 yards or less the 223 will do it. The 204 will do it too and so will many other calibers. The 204 has received a lot of good press, I don't have one.

The 22-250 is very good out as far as 500 yrds if you can hit them that far.

Actually with the lighter bullets in the .22-250, the .204 has the advantage in trajectory past 300yds....and little difference in energy.

I decided on a 25-06 for my coyote hunting. It will work as far as I can hit them and will double nicely on deer if needed.

Mac, my two mags now are an Anschutz and an NEF Sportster with 3 barrels...22 LR, .22 Mag and .17 HMR (bull)
Hate to take the Annie out in the "knockabouts" of coyote calling and thought I should at least have a repeater if I went the .22mag route..so I was thjinking Maarlin or Savage bolts or a Ruger 96/22M..
I guess I'm leaning more toward the NEF .204 now...

Does the fluted barrel perform any better than the plain bull barrel ?

Is heat buildup more of a problem with the plain bull barrel ?

For coyotes...I don't think heat build up is really a issue is it ?I can't see taking that many shots in a row at yotes to worry about it.....Both the bull and fluted do really good in this caliber from everything posted here...just that it is very loud...

Yup Mac...I was thinking about "sighting in" when a few rounds are fired in succession..actually, if it requires some several rounds, all I have to do is proceed more slowly...

michell is doing rather well with it...don't you think?...Granted...it's one of the 243's that never shoot wurth a durn and everyone has problems with...

i can't believe i didn't say that part the good 3 shot group that i shot had no barrel cooling time as soon as i could load them and get back on target i shot.

as for the 22mag 204 ruger thing i have had a good bit of time with both. the 22 mag although fun to shoot and a good shooter just didn't seem to have the power needed for my big ohio dogs. i've shot some as close as 30 yards and it did work just fine but if you get closer to 100 they run a long way and if you don't have snow you wont find them that little 22 mag just don't leave a blood trail. now the 204 i've only had 2 runner on about 15 dogs and one was my fault the other i think the bullet blew up ( i never found him) but the rest have been DRT (dead right there) from 30 yards to 300 they all drop . go with the 204 .
