Hornady 4-die .475 pistol die question
« on: December 14, 2005, 03:55:10 PM »
Hello, folks.

I just picked up a set of Hornady custom-grade titanium dies for my .475 Linebaugh, and it had an extra die in the pack that looks like a taper-crimp die (I assume?). I like to seat, then crimp in seperate operations, but I don't know about the taper crimp on this particular cartridge- I would think a rolled crimp would hold better. I'm not sure why a taper crimp would be used in a revolver cartridge?

Any input, folks?

Thanks, take care! Regan

Maybe for jacketed bullets with no canelure?

The seater/crimper die in my hornady 454 set roll crimps really smoothly (on 45 colt).  I don't like the taper crimp, but I load lead bullets with a canelure.  I also have the Lee FCD, but I don't like it enough better to warrant a separate step in the process.

Four die sets contain a bullet seater and a bullet crimper. The crimper should apply a roll crimp not a taper I'm sure. Call Hornady and ask if you have questions. The number is toll free and the advice is good.

I have a set and it is a four die set also. It has both a roll crimp die and a taper crimp die.

I have no Idea why, unless someone chambers a pistol for it.

I noticed that the newer die sets are listed as three die sets.
