7-30 waters accuracy and velocity in a ...
« on: November 01, 2005, 09:42:15 AM »
What velocity can I expect to get from a 16 inch carbine barrel?  How much faster will the 7-30 shoot than the TCU in a 16 incher?

Also what kind of accuracy is this cartridge capable of from a carbine setup.  I've read that the 7TCU is super accurate.  Should I be able to get 1/2 to 3/4 MOA out of the Waters?  Just posing questions at this point.

Picked up the barrel at a gun show and haven't had a chance to take it out to the range yet to see what it will do.

Thanks,
Brad

You can typically expect a 150-200fps increase of the Waters over the 7mm TCU.  As far as velocity out of the 16" barrel, you should be able to get a 120gr bullet over 2400fps with the 7-30.

With a good load, I wouldn't be surprised to see sub-1" groups at 100 yards.

I do not have the 16ΒΌ" but I do have the 21" in 7-30 and I get 2680 fps with 120gr. Sierras, and I get 0.75moa with this load.

I've been contemplating a 7tcu or 7-30 waters (in a pistol barrel - 14") also. In my studies - according to my Nosler manual the 7tcu actually has more velocity for the same weight bullets......maybe in a rifle barrel the larger powder volume will have a chance to burn, but in a 14" barrel the 7tcu seems to be better. - At least according to that manual, my other manuals all have the 7tcu from a 10" barrel and in those it gives up about 150 to 200 fps to the longer barreled waters.

Mack you use h110 and L'Il gun in the 7x30 waters. Where you get this load data. That is mag. pistol powder. Best powder I've found is IMR3031 .
