Bolt Lock Closed...Anyone know of a way?
« on: March 04, 2003, 02:08:01 PM »
I heard of someone trying to develop a bolt lock for the 10/22 to keep it closed.

This would help accuracy for single shots, and let me shoot some loads I cant right now.  Like the 60 grain Aguila.

Any insight/input/opinions?

sounds like a gunsmith problem to me you could ask one wht they think.  I would check the 22 forums on the web as I think I read some where tht some one else was trying to come up with the same thing. Also try the gunsmithing ones.  Jim

Why can't you should the 60 grainers in your 10/22.  They funtion fine in mine.  They just tumble all over the target.

Why I cant shoot the 60 grainers...
« Reply #3 on: March 05, 2003, 03:24:49 PM »
The reason they tumble (well, one of them) is the action lets the short cartridge break the gas seal wayyyyy too soon to get up to designed speed of 900 fps.

Comes out of mine at like 700, not enought twisting rate.

I am gonna try to hold the bolt closed with my right thumb and shoot lefty next time.

If you are going to do that I would think a stout rubber band from the for arm to the bolt handle would hold it closed as I would not think it would take much pressure to keep it shut. Jim

How about buying a bolt rifle like a 77/22 ? It might keep you from butchering your 10/22 if you just have to shoot this 60 gr stuff. The 77/22 would be a nice addition to your rimfire rifle collection and you would then have two nice rimfires! Problem solved!

Savage, buying a other gun would not solve the problem as some guns like this stuff and some do not. Buying a 7722 would be risky just to shoot this 60 grain stuff but would would be a nice addition shooting regular stuff.  I also do not see how holding your bolt shut or using a rubber band to hold the bolt shut would be considered as butchery as it is not doing anything to the gun? I would agree with you as to if a permament thing would be done to the gun. The rubber band thing was just to see if the gun shot the round and would keep your hand away from the bolt for safety reasons that is why I suggested it.  Jim

Bolt holding dilema...Report on success!
« Reply #7 on: March 07, 2003, 05:35:41 PM »
Thanks for the thought of a rubber band.
Found a black one used for packaging, not much stretch, but just enough.

Bullet fires wonderfully, and I can still operate the action manually, as I am stouter than the rubber band.  Just barely...

Bullet drops like a rock, though.  I will plot the ballistics tonight to see whats going on.  Didnt keyhole, and made tight groups for such a wierd round.  Just under 1/2 inch at 20 yards with no fliers.

Good enough to pop a boar in the nose!

Wonder what the heck I could use it for?

I talked to my gunsmith about this round and he bought some to try in his bench rest 22 rifle will be interesting to hear what he has to say. Glad to hear they did not tumble for you and I am going to try mine at longer distances to see if they tumble at longer distances. Mine only dropped 1 inch at 25 yards though if yours are dropping a lot at 20 yards that is interesting and I wonder why. Jim

I didn't mean the rubber band thing as butchery. I meant having a gunsmithing modification to lock the bolt closed durring firing. I just have a problem with trying to make one design work as it was never intended. The usual result is that it performs poorly for  the intended function after modifications and even worse for the modified function.

Savage I agree with you as most of the time things just get screwed up but then once in a great while a good idea is born and something good comes out of the expirementing :-D Maybe not in this case but in general that is how we get new products. Jim

Savage I agree not with my gun either and I guess what I ment to say was I did not mean that statement to just guns in general as a lot of things get discovered that way.  Also that type of tinkering is beyond most of us but the guys like Ruger, Browning, ect was what I was talking about as far comming up with new ideas, beyond most of us. You are right in what you said as far as what  can happen to good guns ask any gunsmith about some of the guns they get to fix that has been "fixed" Jim

jh45gun,

Done my share of experiments, some with poor results some with SPECTAULAR results! One thing I have learned is to do my expermantaion with expendable things. There is no need to reinvent a locked breech rifle. They exist in many forms. I bet it would be cheaper to buy an H&R single shot or comprable rifle to try this 60gr ammo in than to have a blowback action modified to stay closed durring firing. I could live with the rubber band fix for a couple of shots just to satisfy my curiousity.
By the way, I used to live in SE WI in the little town of Neenah. Enjoyied my stay there.

I also have a drop of about 1" at 20 yds or so.
I guess compared to normal loads, I thought that was rock-like!

Still, wondering what I could use this for.  Got it to work with the rubber band thingy.

Too much for all but the genetically mutated squirrels, not enough for boar or deer and stuff.

Maybe it would be a good varminting round for Nutrea rats and such.

My two bits.

I would think if it still shot good at 100 yards and did not tumble at that distance and you could calculate the drop consistantly it would have more energy at 100 yards due to the heavier bullet. I have heard it drops about 16 inches at 100 yards. It might group better at longer distances also due to the heavy bullet staying on course better but then that is guessing on my part so I guess I will have to shoot it at longer ranges and see. I guess the guys who shoot the metal targets like rams and such would have a good use for it. Jim

60Gr Aguila Ballistics Table...And interpretations
« Reply #16 on: March 08, 2003, 04:38:24 PM »
Range Velocity Impact Drop  ToF    Energy
0         950       -1.5     0        0       120
10       941        0.51    0.26   0.03   118
20       932        2.13    0.91   0.07   116
30       924        3.33    1.97   0.1     114
40       916        4.14    3.43   0.13   112
50       908        4.53    5.31   0.16   110
60       900        4.5      7.61   0.2    108
70       893        4.04    10.34  0.23  106
80       886        3.13    13.51  0.26  105
90       879        1.79    17.12  0.3    103
100     872        0         21.18  0.33  101

jh45gun, you sure were correct on the long range slap of this round.
As the table above clearly indicates!  (clear as mud)

It differs from a "normal" load in a few ways...
i.e. 38 gr HP @ 1280fps = 138 foot pounds at muzzle
The conventional load has 13 more foot pounds of power at muzzle,
but drops to 79 foot pounds @ 100 yards, while the 60gr still has 101.

The lighter bullets decellerate much faster, which would prob account for increased wobbling and an unpredictable ballistic curve.

The drop of 21 inches vs 14 inches for a 38 grainer...like comparing a .30-06 with a .30-.30.  They both reach the point of impact scoped in, just take reaaaaallly different routes.

I wonder what shaving off a meplat on the nose would do to the weight of the bullet and performance?  Like the SGB tool...claims a flat nose increases accuracy and helps flatten the curve a little.  May defeat the purpose, but what the hell?

I might get a stiffer spring for my 10/22 just to play with this round and not have to juke around with the rubber band.  Looks kinda stupid on my rifle.

Stuporman, I wonder if you put a stiffer spring in if that will give you problems with normal shells? it sure would look better I agree :) Thanks for posting the chart but I do agree it is not very clear as to what the # mean. Jim

It is an Excel file with tables and line charts to show how the 60gr xcompares to a "normal" Hollowpoint.

In this case the 38 gr standard velocity HP.

Hope it helps.
