Sillouette or 3D goose decoys?
« on: October 13, 2005, 06:05:21 PM »
I was thinking of buying some goose decoys.  In the past, I've just managed to be in the right place at the right time, and took a few geese without even calling.  I went on a guided hunt once and the guides had flat decoys, and we didn't see anything all day (except doves, wouldn't you know it).

What's your experience, anyone?  What works better, flat or full size decoys?  Seems like 3D would be harder to lug around, but less likely to spook the birds.

I say neither.

I field hunt with ten dozen G&H shells and usually do pretty well.  They stack real easy and two of us can pull all of them on our decoy cart.

I have never been a silouette fan, but a lot of people swear by them.  Full bodies are too bulky and $$$$. Try to carry ten dozen full bodies.  No thx.

Let us know how you go.

Depends on what species of goose.  Personal experience with specks and snows is that they start out too high to be able to see the silouhettes.  Full body or rags are needed to provide something to see at those high starting altitudes.

Sometimes honkers love the outlaws (silhouette decoys) and other times its like kiss of death.  Mix in both is my recommendation.

a mix is the only way to go.  i've got 2 dz full body, 2 dz shells, 1 dz floating shells, 4 dz outlaws, and several dozen floaters.  if you're limited on funds or weight you're best off with plain shells i would suppose.
