I open my mouth and said," a T/C had the world' long range accuracy record.". Now I have to show date, time and who, etc. The best I came up with is:

According to Smith, a shooter named Robert Campbell bested the Colorado Long Range Competition three times with a Bullberry 7-30 Waters barrel, most recently with a 3-shot group of 31/32 inch - fired from 500 meters!

Is the 31/32 for handgun the best long range accuracy?

Do an internet search for Don Bower. I think you will find better groups at longer distances.

I think even the American Rifleman article about Don mentions smaller groups.
FWIW my best 600 yard 4-shot group is 1.576 (witnessed and signed).
I was just playing around that day to see how my 6.5-284 XP would group.
Roy was spotting from a closer distance (safely) and never mentioned what the group size was doing.
3-shot groups @ 500 meters could go even lower if your goal was to see how small you could get them.
It is just a matter of spending time and getting the right conditions.
Of course you need a certain level of ability from both the shooter and the SP. SP's are now shooting at 1000 yards under an IBS format and putting 5 shots for record score under 10 inches.
My 11 year old this past summer shot a 3-shot group and a 4-shot group w/a 6.5-284 MOA Maximum using a portable bench just East of pueblo, CO that was right @ the 10 inch mark himself (good conditions and a Bower rest sure didn't hurt :-D ) We didn't even measure the two groups. There was at least 4 other adults there at the time he was shooting besides myself.

When you think about it the more shots involved the harder it is (especially @ LR) to print small groups.

The LR fun today for Steve and I is trying for groups not only @ 1000 yards, but at one mile. Yes, they will be 3-shot groups :-D

One of the guys on the specialty pistols forum had it. I will have to find out who has it and then let you guys know.

As far as Longrange hits on critters, Steve Hugel nailed a coyote @ just over 900 yards with a SP and this past Ocotber I made connections on PD's
@ 1590 yards and 1800 yards. All three were on ranches east of Pueblo, Colorado. Two 6.5-284's and one 6mm-284 were used (all three were XP-100's).

Your Welcome. BTW you are only a couple of days older than I am :grin:

As I re-read the last part of the article the author mentioned a 5/8 x 3/4 3-shot group. From what I can tell from the article and knowing Don my "assumption" is 500 meters. 500 meters is where Don likes to start shooting. FWIW, The majority of Don's barrels were TC rechambers, not custom barrels.
That being said, I don't know what the world long range accuracy record with a speciality handgun is. There could easily be some guys or gals who have surpassed the milestones mentioned here. I know of several people involved in a LR experiment for 1000 yard shooting with Contenders (not Encores) which I am pretty excited about.
I guess it all depends on what your parameters or guidelines are.
Some people wouldn't consider 500 yards or meters from the bench LR anymore.

For instance, at Iowa's 1000 yard matches they have set up some rules to govern the "handgun class." They are club rules since the IBS does not have a "handgun class." In later years some of Don's SP's would not have met barrel length limitations @ Iowa (although the ones mentioned in the American Rifleman article surely would).

Although I have never spoken with Robert Campbell, he is sure due a good job and great shooting and also kudos to Fred @ Bullberry :grin:

I do believe that if you got a group of folks together that shot at LR with specialty handguns for a number of days and had good to great conditions I believe a lot of the shooting world would be amazed.

There are a group of guys that do get together yearly and shoot at long range. There is a growing interest in this type of shooting and I believe with more involvement you will see more and more milestones surpassed.
What I appreciate about Don is that he (and some others) have built a foundation and paved the way for others to continue on.

IMO Specialty handguns properly built and used correctly are capable of the same accuracy as 1000 yard bench guns.
