Encore questions, Powder questions, and more...
« on: December 03, 2005, 11:39:25 AM »
I've never been able to get my Encore to shoot, and I've tried all different loads and projectiles.

What have you all been able to get to work?  Is that with pellet or powder?

Now I read somewhere that 50g (volume) of powder does NOT equal a 50g pellet.  Is this so?  I haven't any pellets to weigh, otherwise I wouldn't even ask...

I also slugged my barrel, and my land/grove is .005 inch, is this a typical?  My Buckwacka is also .005, so I guess its on par...

What is the REAL world accuracy that can be expected?  I can make a one hole group at 100 yards too... but my second shot is usually nowhere close!!

Thanks

My Encore shoots 1" groups @ 100 yards using a 295 grain Powerbelt on top of 100 grains(2 pellets) of Triple 7. I also used the 348 grain Powerbelts and 150 grains of Pyrodex and shot 1 1/2" groups. My .02 Mike

I either use 2 triple7 pellets or 90 gr. of loose triple7 with 195 gr. PR duplex bullets. I also got real good accuracy with 295 gr. power belts.

I weigh a 50 gr. triple7 pellet and it was not the same weight as 50 gr. by volume of loose triple7. the pellets are lighter. That is why you see them advertise 3 pellets or a max of 120 gr. of loose powder.

I get great accuracy with my set up in my Encore. 1 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards.

So there is a 20% difference....Hmm, thats quite a bit.  Is that with just 777, or with pyro and the rest?

I am not 100%, but I think it is the same for the rest.  :D

I broke out my reloading scale:

With 777, 2F:

50 grains by weight equals approx 73 grains by volume in an un-tapped powder measure.

50 Grains by volume (untapped) equals 38.1 to 38.9 grains by weight

Pryo 50/50 (donated by a friend):

1 pellet = 38.1 to 38.9 grains by weight

3 pellets (150gr) pyrodex, 250gr Hornady SST.  Very accurate.   Shot a nice doe at 75yds.  DRT.  Dead Right There.

I posted a problem similar to yours a while back. 150 grains of 777 with the Hornady spirepoints with tails would not shoot.  I dropped down to 100 grains and had 4 shots touching at 100 yards.  I do plan on experimenting more this summer, but this combination was deadly on a recent Pike County, Ill. hunt.
