Something I found out
« on: December 19, 2005, 06:28:34 AM »
The last time I went to BPS, I asked Larry, a guy that works parttime there about the difference between the rem. and win.  loads for the 223. He said he believes that win. has for the most part a hotter load. He also told me that when he reloads he prefers the win. casings to the rem. casings. He said that he thought win. had a better brass than remington. the reason I asked him was because, the rem. 55 gr shot lower than the win.  Well, one other thing is, the casings he told me that when he reloads with the spent rem. cases he has problems with the reload. I can't say exactly, but to me it sounds like the rem. brass isn't as good. What are your thoughts guys?

I've been reloading with the Winchester brass I got from all the .223 white box stuff I'd shot up. I have stuck cases primarily when going to hotter loads, so I back off to wherever they're most accurate. Don't have a chrony yet, so I can't tell more beyond that.

Have done 1x reloads with Remington in my 700BDL for the .30-06, and no problems so far. The Winchester has needed trimming every other load, which is more than I'd expected considering I've been neck sizing. I have heard that Win brass is stronger than Rem; I don't know whether or not it's true...
Life was so much simpler when I thought I knew everything...

Tommy:

Different lots of brass even from the same manufacure will be different.Winchester brass has always been known to give more case capacity for any given case.I'm not knocking Remingtons...I use them a-lot of the time...but what I am saying is each lot of brass will be different...you can weigh the cases and see the difference...

i've used both Rem' and Win' in various cartridges.   my .270' loads in Rem' brass shoot Very Well.   It's no trick to call my shots with that one.   My .223 heavy-barrel'd Handi' shoots Rem' nickel-plated like a house-of-fire (very well!).    My .308 loads in Win' brass will shoot with anything out there in  a hunting rifle.....and would probably give one-ragged-hole at 100 yds' with the right shooter behind it.

the 7 mm Rem' mags I loaded for some friends in Rem' brass dragged on the expander ball significantly more than the Win' brass.   Not only is the capacity greater in the Win ' brass but it seems to be softer......because they usually make their cases using Less brass if you do the math.    (That's why Win' oftentimes weighs less than Rem' brass.)

i'd start with Rem' brass in everything except the .308 which is Winchester's  premiere cartridge for accuracy in the .30 cal' arena.   I know it's worked for me; but you've got to learn what your rifle likes best.

take care,

ss'

Funny, I have found that every cal in Winchester brass has less capacity then Remington brass.  That would also explain why your friend gets higher velocity out of thhe Winchester brass.  Larry
