i am going to purchase a new handi
which caliber would you provide
i have a 45-70 gg
a 7 mag rifle

I love the '06, but if you have a 7Mag I'm not sure there's enough difference in hunting, etc. If you're looking for something to throw bigger bullets then the '06 makes sense, or you could wait for the .35 Whelen.

308 has a reputation for great accuracy, but so does the 7Mag. If I were in your position (which I am :lol: ) I'd look for something between my .223 Ultra and the '06 -- a 7mm-08? Otherwise, if you're looking for a new caliber for no other reason than the fact that you want one, I don't think you'd be sorry with either; both are great calibers!

And I'm hoping the .45-70 is still there when I get off work tonight... :-D

The Ultra 30-06 is a fine choice...and will make a Handi-dandy rifle to go for and if I were going to go for it...I would make sure I got the Ultra with it's 23" barrel and laminated stocks for the 06' over the plain pallet wood stocked 22"..you can also get it with the synthetic stocks with a 22" in blue or a 22" stainless...and the 308 can be had in a few different ways.. the Survivor bull barrel/Choate stocks or the regular contour pallet wood Handi or in the ultra form..those are 22" regular barrls..I've had both types in the regular blued versions...and both shot very good..the Survivor I restocked with the cinnamon laminates..put on the steel forearm spacer and steel trigger gaurd to dress it up..It is amazingly accurate with Federal Match ammo and even better with regular Winchester power points...less than 1/2" moa groups with both....so..you have a few options either way you go..The regular 30-06 shot good with Winchester and Remington ammo...my last 30-06 Handi...was one of the Ultra-Comp barrels...and it was a tack driver with the Federal Fusion 150 grain ammo...unfortunatly they are no-longer available...My choices are the Ultra's with the laminated stocks...they have a better fit and finish and feel to them.

I basically sent the same message as Az223. I have been on a "caliber quest". I wanted to reasonably span between 223 and 458 diameter bullets. So I give more importance to the bullet diam than the chambering details. I guess I break it down to a bullet and a chamber capacity, and shape of the chamber is sort of an afterthought for me.

Get a small bore offering, would be my advice, that would be based on my own weird interests, of course. But, if you only want thoughts on a 308 vs 30-06 chambering - get the odd 6 and never look back :grin:

i wonder if the bullet size advantage applies to the handi? That is, the '06 being able to handle the larger bullets. I guess it all depends on the twist of the barrel. It could be the '06 twist rate is not sufficient to take advantage of the larger bullets. Something one needs to check out...

I have both calibers. I LOVE the .308 because i find its inherently more accurate and the recoil is a lot less. That being said, I would sooner use the '06 over the 308 for big critters like moose and elk.

Ballistically, the '06 and 308 are so close as to not make any difference. Since we are talking about a tip openm single shot, action length has no bearing on the subject, the guns will weigh the same and handle the same, it is a question of personaly preference. But if you have a 7mm Mag, there is nothing that either of these give that you don't already have. A 243, 25-06 or a 35 Whelen would offer a better ballistic balance to your battery.

you can get military surplus ammo for the .308 from places like sportsmans guide and cheaper than dirt for, well, dirt cheap! i even saw in one of the catalogs this month actuall surplus sniper rounds (at about $40.00 a box!) and the other avaliable configurations (incendiarys, tracers) are endless

Well if I were in your shoes and since you have a 7 mag may I suggest the 25-06? Because you can load it up for deer size game and load it down for varmints.

Of the two calibers in question: 30-06. As already has been posted, they are almost ballistic twins. But I think there is less of a chance of a problem with the 30-06. Besides, the 30-06 is a classic. "Every shooter should have at least one."
