Thinking about a NEF
« on: December 21, 2005, 01:07:32 PM »
I've been thinking about buying a NEF, actually 2. One for me in 270 and one for my wife in 25.06. The only other NEF I've come across or fired was my sons 410. Nice little gun. I've had my fair shre of bolt actions and pumps, but never a NEF.
I figure I should ask the experts. What are the pros and cons? The good , the bad and the ugly. They seem to have quite a following, but how is the quality and the accuracy? How easy is it to change out a barrel? All we're looking for is a solid, accurate gun to to shoot a deer or whatever every now and then.
Thanks,
Steve

WEEEELLLLLLLL,,,It depends on two things.....how far are you shooting and how much tinkering are you willing to do?

I'm not happy with mine,I'm gonna sell it....BUT I think I just got a lemon....I would recommend holding the gun in your hands that you are gonne buy and check it as Mac has outlined in the stickys

You are probably gonna hafta do some of the tricks in the stickys to get really good accuracy but it may very well have acceptable HUNTING ACCURACY out-of-the-box....It's kinda a crap shoot but the odds are heavily in YOUR favor of getting a pretty good rifle at a real good price

read all the posts from the last few days and then decide for yourself   :D
Good shot placement + well constructed bullet = DEAD

Yup...Look at them close before laying out your cash on them...most folks are in a hurry to get them home...and it's real difficult to let them go back. You have a real good chance it will be fine..but if you read a-lot of the post you'll find there are lemons in the basket too...Read the Sticky's at the top of the page...I hope they help you in your decision... :D

I have 2 NEFs, the .223 Ultra and .17HMR. Both are very accurate; .75" or better at 100yds. Days they don't group are usually caused by the "nut behind the stock."  :)

Quality? I'm impressed with both rifles. They're inexpensive, to be sure, and from what I've read they do have their share of problems. But in comparison, a friend recently sold his 7mm Mag 700 Remington because of quality issues. No tool marks on the NEFs, and everything locks up great. Brief problem with cases sticking on the .223; 10 min. in front of the TV polishing it by hand cured it.

If you reload, you may have an issue with cases sticking when you go to hot loads -- The cases expand a LOT, and the ejector (if the rifle isn't using an extractor) won't be strong enough to eject. Two solutions: Step down slightly with the loads, or always full-length resize.

If you go to look at them, check the way they lock-up. When closed, you should see no light between the barrel & receiver. Take the forend off the stock and make sure there's no play when closed; if the dealer won't take the forend off, go to another dealer.

Overall, these rifles are more than hunting accurate, and are downright fun off the bench. Benchrest accuracy, if you're pursuing that, is going to requiere a LOT of $$$ for ANY rifle. Because the NEF's need to be taken off the rests between shots, that adds to the variables in accuracy because you'll never seat it the same way twice. But for fun on a budget, I say go for it! I'm happy with mine.  :D

And MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

I have a .223 and Huntsman.  I love both, but the accuracy of both falls apart past 200 and 100 yards repectively.  Well, forget the muzzleloader...  anything inside 100 yards is meat for the beast (me).  Should not shoot more than 100 yards with the Huntsman anyway.

I had the .223 out to Nebraska last summer and it was great on any p'dogs closer than 200 yards.  Past that i needed my friends 220 swift.

[i broke down and bought a Kimber 22-250 for those longer shots].  at heck, who am i kidding the 22-250 will handle ALL of the shots.

the only complaint i have about the .223 barrel is that it needs to be really fowled before it settles down to shoot good groups.  for instance, the first two 5 shot groups could fall anywhere from 2 to 5 MOA.  After that, the gun shoots really consistently (.75 to 1.25 moa).  I just don't clean it from March to January...

i really appreciate the cheap flexibility these guns offer.  For the price of a Thompson center you can buy a handi, a few barrels and possibly 1 or 2 decent scopes.

good luck, merry Christmas!

A couple things that may correct this fault if you so inclined to do so... is to hand lap the bore with Flitz...another is to coat the bore with Moly Fusion...I've heard so great things about this product from a few friends...and it does seem to help in this regard...
