I was at the club yesterday and found in the brass barrel some .223 Rem. fired brass that is an improved version. But which one is what I am wondering. The case diameter is the same .376 at the shoulder as it is at the web. The shoulder e shoulder is 45 degrees(so says two gunsmiths at our club) instead of the standard 40 degrees that most Ackley versions have. This is where I am stumped. Anyone got an idea of what improved version this one may be? Lawdog

Not trying to be a smart ass but sounds like it was improved with an overload in a bad chamber. I say that because why would anyone throw away a fireformed case for an improved cartridge? I talked to a guy in Penn. that shoots a 6.5-06 Gibbs. Loads them so hot that the primers fall out of the cases after a couple firings. He does not let that small detail bother him, he just glues in new primers! :eek:

Not to question wisdom, but how did they determine the angle? The difference between 40 and 45 is pretty slight and I'd have to guess that it is not a 45. If it is, it could be a custom job, or an overload (but not likely)

Because the necks were slightly split. There were only 6 cases we could find.

The 'smith's' measured and compared them to other improved .223 cases they had. The shoulder angle is 45 degrees. I just though someone might know what improved version these are. Lawdog

I'll have to say a custom chamber then. I can find no records that we have showing one with that steep of a shoulder angle. I'm not sure why one would do so, other than it looks cool, but hey it's all up to the designer.

The gunsmith's nor I could find any information either. That's why I asked here. Thought someone here may know. Thanks for trying. Lawdog
