New Pointed Hornady Ammo?
« on: December 16, 2005, 05:45:27 AM »
Has anyone checked into the new pointed Hornady ammo that recently came out for lever guns?  I am curious as to whether or not it was loaded to a safe pressure to be fired from a Contender???  The idea of a pointed factory 200gr   round for my .35 Remington barrell is very interesting to me...

I haven't seen the ammo yet, but if it is designed for a Model 94 and be safe it is well within the range for a Contender.

It will work fine in a Contender..just the ticket for those who don't reload..spitzer 30-30 ammo over the counter..claims state almost 300 fps from nearest competitor..

I e-mailed Hornady and asked if they were going to sell the bullets themselves.  They replied that they "will not for at least a year if ever".  Too bad...

A friend owns a pawn/gun shop and just got in some of the 30-30 loads. The box says 160gr at 2400fps. If you do not reload, I think this will be a great round for the Contender.  If you do reload, there are many bullets available that will do a good job for less money. He is getting $17.50 a box. I'm going to buy a box to see if the ammo does do 2400fps in my Win 94.

Thanks guys.  I am hopeful for a 35 Remington round.  I don't have a 30-30 barrell...

I've got a box of the .30-30 and plan to chrongraph them at my next range session.  I will be putting them through a 20" Winchester and a 16" Contender carbine barrel and compare them the readings I got from some Remington and Winchester factory loads.  I don't expect I'll get 2400 as that is probably from a 24" barrel.   Factory 150 grain loads read about 2050fps and 1930 for the 170 grain loads.  If the 20" barrel readings are over 2200 I'll believe the 2400 from a 24" barrel.  My 16" barrel gives me 2350 with 125 grain PSP hand loads.
