357 maximum

:)Went out shooting yesterday with my contender with 14" 357max barrel. Shooting from the bench at 50yards it shot three shot cloverleaf groups with 180gr xtps with lil gun powder. Moved from the bench to shooting stix from the ground out to about 65 yards and shot about one inch groups. I put a millet reddot scope on it and I like it alot compared to the regular scopes as I will be mainly hunting in the woods with shots out to 75 yards. So I would like to thank everyone on this board for all the help and the post I have read

Is that your deer hunting outfit? Let us know how it performs on game, HUH?

Has anyone loaded 125 gr hornady bullets. I found a recipe for H110. They don't recommend cutting powder below 3%. At that, it lloks like a compressed load. I did two for a try. I am leary; however, I am following Hornady's 1996 load book.

I've had 4 different 357Max barrels and the ONLY "light"(read under 180gr) bullet I've ever got to shoot in any of them was the long discontinued REM 150gr PSP. Granted there are a lot of 35's out there and a lot of 'm I didn't try. Nor have I heard of anyone else having much success there either.

There is nothing inherently wrong with a reasonable compressed load and H110 IIRC needs a high density loading to burn consistently. Hornady's current (7th ed) has H110 with 22.7 gr min and 26.0 gr max with their 125s whereas Hodgdon's shows a Speer 125 starting at 27.5 and max at 28.5 gr.

Not to knock your choice in scopes, but the Millet red dot will not hold up due to the Max's recoil. I had one break, sent it back to Millet. I got a new one from them,it broke also. Sent it back and got it replaced....now it's on a .22 barrel. It works fine with no problems,I've won many pistol shoots with it. Just thought I'd share some knowledge with everyone.....

I had a problem with my contender carbine. My scope was shook loose by recoil. I finally caught it and corrected. i have been loading a .35 Remington 180 gr bullet. I now have them touchng at 67 yards which is adequate for shooting in groves at pigs.
I also loaded 125 grain H110. I fired them and they print low one inch and 4 inches to left. I will not use them for my carbine. I have a ten inch .357 max barrel which I might try them in. The point of impact is too far off from the 180 to even consider. I would have to set up the pistol for the 125 or any other bullet. I would like to try the .357 Hornady revolution when it comes available.

My max's shoot 180s and up. I have 2 and have never had a problem with the recoil. You can load them really light or you can get the 200s or 210s to screaming. Rather than pumping up a load with the 125 grain bullet, I would shoot a moderate load with a 180, have similar recoil with better energy and expansion on game animals.
Just a nickels worth to ponder.

I've had good results with Win 296 and the HornadyXTP-180's in my .357Max.
Five shot groups you can cover with a quarter at 50 yds. = Good nuff for me !

I have gotten my .357 max carbine to shoot the 35 180 grain bullet. I have a 10 in .357 max with a scope.
I decided to shoot some 125 grain 357 mags yesterday. I am disappointed in performance. I was thinking scope; however, I also think maybe the barrale doesn't like 125 grain. I have some 158 grain which I will try.
I checked my mounts for being loose and didn't find that. I printed to the right several times. I went to 2x on scope which I thought would make a difference. I still had problems. No real group to brag about. I feel I could have done as good with my open sights on the gun.
Has anyone had a barrel which did not like a light bullet? Would a heavier bullet cure my problem?

None of my 4 barrels will shoot light bullets worth a hoot.....180's and up with the afore mentioned exception of the REM 150 PSP and it wasn't my most accurate bullet either. Walt

Hi I have some 180gr remingtons how do I need to load them. I load the 180xtps and having great results with them just bought some of the remingtons to try. I have been loading the xtps with 19.6gr of lilgun and rem 7 1/2 primers and they shoot just about the same hole. Should I try these with the same powder and primer combo. Thanks for any help

I've had good success with both Hornady and REM 180's. Also both Hornady's, XTP and SSP. Biggest advantage I see is price of the REM. GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt

I gather that I should abandon my quest for a screaming 125 and go to the heavier bullet.
I think there is a hornady revolution in .357. I want something with a better ballistic coeffient than the standard hollow point in .357. Any bullet suggestions?

I think that hornady makes an 180 gr ssp that is pointed. I don't know that you will gain that much at the ranges that you are looking at with the max. I wouldn't think that the higher bc would make a huge difference inside 200 yrds.

I donot have any load data for them though I migh just use the data for the hornady 180gr ssp bullet though and start at starting loads and work up. Has any one used this bullet will it work at the maxs velocity from a pistol barrel thanks for any help

I got a 200gr LBT LFN for my DW 357max and tried them in my 14" Contender barrel with 1/2" group at 50yds using sandbag. They shoot almost as good in my revolver. Now gotta try them on game.
