side,under cockers vs barrel cocker?
« on: December 18, 2005, 12:38:07 PM »
People say they are more accurate but is it enough to matter?how much more accurate are they? You will probably see a lot more questions from me in the days to come as I want to get one and have no idea at this point on what to get.I have some ideas but not set in stone.
1.a good light trigger
2.accurate
3.able to kill squriells or rabbits out to 30 yards. once in a while
4. mostly target shooting

are peep sights availble for them? I am also thinking of getting a .22 rimfire bullet trap, that should also work for any pellet also.thanks for your answers ahead of time. sj  :?

As far as accuracy goes just check out the reports from Field matches and see what are winning them?  Mostly under lever rifles.  Most all spring powered target rifles are side cockers.  Barrel breakers give satisfactory hunting accuracy but when your trying to hit a dime at 30 - 45 or more yards then you'll want all the accuracy you can get.  The idea about the .22 lr trap is a good one.  A bit noisy but a good one.  Peep sights are available but scopes really bring out the accuracy that modern air rifles are capable of.  Lawdog

You'll find that with most better guns accuracy is more dependent on the skills of the shooter than the abilities of the gun. The difference between side lever, under-lever and break barrels in terms of accuracy is small enough that the average shooter won't be able to tell the difference. Any quality gun can be very accurate in the right hands. Many matches have been won by break barrel guns as well as fixed barrel. My old Walther 55 is a break barrel, and its every bit as accurate as my side lever fwb300s target rifle. Both are strictly paper punchers though, purpose built match rifles. I also have a .22 Webley Xocet break barrel carbine that can produce dime size groups at 30 yards and a side lever .22 Diana 54 that will do the same. If you are looking for an all around gun for both hunting and target shooting there are more than a few available- guns from Diana, Weihrauch, Webley, and more all fit the bill.  All you need to do is decide how much you want to spend, and start looking.
There are a couple decent peep sights out there, mostly made by Williams.  The 22 rimfire trap works quite well, I've used one for some time now with no problems.

Very powerful and accurate.  So powerful that they need the right set of rings when mounting a scope.  BKL Double Strap are the only ones I recommend.  You won't go wrong with a RWS 48 in .22 for small game.  Lawdog

For scopes with a 1” tube I use the BKL model 263(or 278 if I needed an offset model).  For scopes with a 300mm tube I use the BKL model 301(or 302 if I needed an offset model).  Word of warning, ”Stay Away From B-Square Rings”.  I tried them and they just don’t hold, too soft.  Lawdog
