I am just now looking into getting a TCR and I have a couple questions.

First are T/C custom shop barrels still available? If not does anyone else make barrels for the TCR? What price range are we talking about? My email capabilities are very limited for a time and I have not been able to contact either T/C JDJ or SSK

Second what is meant by magnumproofing in my net surfing I have seen that term several times. But no clear definition.

Custom shop barrels are no longer available. All parts inventory was lost in the factory fire. For a time, SSK Industries still had some parts and made barrels, but those are gone now, too. No new barrels.

When the TCR first came out, it was only for standard calibers. Later, some frame modifications were made so that it would handle magnum calibers, and I believe something about the barrel fit was changed so that the magnum barrels would not fit on the old frames, but old barrels would fit on magnum frames. Maybe someone else here knows more particulars about the magnum frame thing.

You might want to check with Mike Sirois at OTT. There was a rumor that he was going to start making barrels for the TCR's. www.ottllc.com

Not quite. I spoke with TC a couple weeks ago and they still have 'some' parts available. I have an extractor in the mail, and they still have 'a few' barrels in stock for warranty/service use...but they won't sell any of them (I tried).

Very interesting RT8! This is the first I've every heard of this. Do you know if "sevice work" includes doing magnum conversions on receivers?

Just recieved an e-mail from Mike@OTT he says they are testing a prototype now and hope to be in production early next year. No further specifics but there is hope!

I had mine converted to magnum a few months back. I also bought every caliber they had in the warehouse for $125 apiece. I laugh to see people getting $200-350 a barrel on e-bay. They had sit on the shelfs for along time but they were perfect. Talk to Brain @ Foxridge(T/C custom shop). There may be some left. I'm reluctant to give this info for people to profit on e-bay. Problem are bases Burris use to make them #410298 but no longer do. There may be a few still on gun shop shelves. The last I saw were going for $24.

what did they do to "magnumize" your rifle? Who did the work? What did they charge?
I just want a 6.5 Swede and a 9.3x62, maybe a 22hornet. Ever see the 9.3 as a factory/custom or am I going to have to have it built from scratch?

Had the magnum conversion done on mine back in 92, when they first started doing it. It was done at the custom shop at Fox Ridge. I really have not looked at it close, don't know what they did other than changing the locking lug to a two peice lug. I ordered a .338 win mag barrel at that time. I love it, shoots well, real accurate. And really reaches out there well. The only thing I don't like, is that is only has extractors, not ejectors. That is important when the game you are hunting can hunt back, and lives on meat.

Sounds like you need to get a multi shot gun. I'd be happy to take that .338 barrel off your hands. Just kidding but if anyone has a .338 barrel I'm looking to complete my set.

The magnum barrels have a pin in the middle of the locking notch which prevent the bolt from locking. You could probably defeat it, but I wouldn't advise this, it could be dangerous. The bolt on the magnums are much better steel and have the notch in the bolt which allows it to lock up.
