445 supermag
« on: December 03, 2005, 06:36:33 PM »
I was sondering if the 445 supermag has recoil much greater than a 44 mag, or should I look at a 357 Max.  I want something more powerful than my 357 without too much abuse.  Thanks

recoil

I think the recoil is different in the 445 supermag, I call it more of a push. The wieght of the 445 with an 8" or 10"VH barrel is heavy.

The recoil is less in the 445 than a 44 Ruger blackhawk. Don't get me wrong the gun is very loud and an attention getter but the recoil is transferred differently because of its size.

Thanks, I don't mind the weight.  This gun will be target and hunting with some sort of rest, with hearing protection.  I have a GP-100 6" and I like the feel of the heavier gun.  I also have a 15 VH with a 1.25-4 and an Xp-100 10 1/2"with a 2.5-7.  I can handle the 44 snap, but it does cause a flinch now and then.

Hello,
I've had a DW 357 Supermag with the 8" slotted barrel for @ 18 years now. Two years ago, I bought a new 445 Supermag with the heavy 8" barrel. My past experience with the 357 SM and shooting hot 44 mags in Rugers had me expecting some heavy recoil. What a pleasant surprise! Yes the 445 is loud, but I find it much more pleasant to shoot than the 357 SM. That heavy barrel makes a big difference. I would like to try the 10" to see what that is like. I have been looking for a heavy shroud for my 357SM ever since.

Go ahead, I think you will be VERY happy with the 445.

Be aware, that not withstanding the markings, the Dan Wesson 357 SuperMag is actually chambered for the 357 SuperMag cartridge, not the 357 Maximum.  Properly loaded the 357 SuperMag will out perfrom the 357 maximum, in particular, it will achieve the same velocity with a slightly heavier bullet.  The 357 maxim cartrdige in the SuperMag is like shooting a 38 Special +P in a 357 magnum, although the 357 maximum may be closer to the 357 SuperMag.  A proper 357 SuperMag will produce less erosion than a factory loaded 357 Maximum.

I have a friend who has a 357 maximum Ruger.  357 SuperMags with normal loads will not chamber in it.

I did it.  I bought a 445.  Can't wait to try it.  As soon as my wife calms down, I need to look for a 10" barrel to go with the 6 that is on it.  I guess that I need to check the threads.  My understanding is that the early 445s had threads different than the 44Mag.  I guess that is it worth checking before buying.

Heavyhaul , don't suppose we could see some pretty pictures?

I just saw a 445Mag pistol pack on GA that was of course sold. Seemed like a price I could almost talk myself into.

Hope you enjoy your new find.

WOW  I'm glad I bought before I saw that.  My wife would have freaked.  But I think that I may have.

I called them last week when I saw that at GA,I was second in line :(
That would have gone great with my 375SM and 7414 Pistol Pack especially at that price.

OK guys, you've seen what I've seen. Is this a good price just judging by the pics?

If I were to find another specimen like this at a similar price, should I jump on it? The only thing I would want different is a full under-lug. Is that available ? Yes, I prefer stainless but would settle for blue if I had to.

Am I wrong in thinking this a beautiful piece?

What are your thoughts on this offering.

Sorry to hi-jack your thread Heavyhaul, but this is what I am looking for and need schooling on these fine guns. Should I worry about Palmer or Monson produced guns? Been reading, just want to make darn sure I get what I want at this kind of money.

Thanks for your help.

Palmer vs Monson, 41 Mag
« Reply #13 on: December 12, 2005, 10:09:12 AM »
I would give a Palmer an even tighter inspectiuon than I would give a Monson, but if it passed I would view it as OK.  The Palmers were viewed as just being a little looser in quality control of the fit & finish.

For those who may have an interest, I know of a stainless, six inch, full length under lug shroud, in 41 magnum that's up for sale at an emprorium about 30 miles from here.

I'd be interested, but given that I have a Dan Wesson, a S&W, a Colt, a Taurus, and a Super Blackhawk in 44 magnum and a S&W in 41 Magnum, it would be hard to persaude my wife of my desperate need for it.

No problem Nixter.  This is a good thing.  I just got a little hasty and paid 650 for an unfired 6" blued 445.  I would think that was a good deal considering what I think barrels will cost to add.  I think I would like the 10

Checked with DW and found that a 10" barrel is $318.  That being said, I took possession of MY 445 today and found that it has an 8", no need to by a barrel.  Now I am waiting for my Midway delivery.

Glad to hear your good fortune on the barrel.  AS for myself, I have owned the 8" and the 10" barrels, and for my money, the 8" is a much better balance between portability and power (and if you wan to add shorter barrels later, they are usually MUCH cheaper than the long ones.)

Good look with the new DW.

Rolltide, you are making me feel even better.  The sight seems super slow today, are they making changes or just that busy?  Took me 4hrs to get on. :?

Heavyhaul I think that the website hoster is having a problem. Good luck with your Dan Wesson.
