Author Topic: repair finish on a Mossberg stock (Read 457 times)

The stock has what appears to be water marks on the stock where you would grip the shotgun and in a similar way on the forend where you would grip it for shooting. I remember hunting once with gloves on that had some kind of gripper type plastic (?) nubs on the fingers and palms during a rainstorm. These marks showed up after that outing, and despite many coats of oil nothing seems to penetrate the discoloration. I don't know what the actual finish is on the wood. Not hard and really glossy like polyurethane but something similar. Not simply oiled wood either.

If it would help I could post a pic, if my description doesn't work.

any suggestions are welcomed.

Hey Jal good day to you.

Have you tried to buff the spots out with a soft cloth or anything? I have used old Flannel shirts for this sort of things or other projects that need a buffing up. Another trick I have used before is to use a dremel tool (or use a buffing wheel or some sort) with a small buffing pad on it to rub them out smoothly or similar marks and fine scratches, all depends on what finish is on your gunstock. Sweaty hands by the way can also leave marks on stocks as well as rust on gunmetal because of the acid in the human skin as well as salt of course. Hope this gives you some help. :grin:

thanks Varmintmaster for the ideas.

have not tried a buffing wheel- should I buff it dry or with some kind of oil or something else? I don't want to mess up the rest of the finish though.

I am not sure what the finish is on these stocks- I might try emailing Mossberg for that information then I can get some better sense of where to start.

The finish is likely a varnish of some type and the marks are water marks. Much like the rings sometimes found on coffee tables. They can be buffed out with 0000 steel furr and tounched up with a bit of TruOil or rubbed out using automotive paint rubbing compound. A fresh coat of TruOil will freshen the finish and wax the stock to protect it in the future. use a good grade of furnisture wax containing carnuba to protect your stock..

Hey guys here is a Merry Christmas fix from my better half:

on the water marked stock use 2 teaspoons of mayonnaise on a paper towel, mash it in and let sit for 15-20 minutes. I had to do it twice in a couple of spots but it worked fine!

next time I use that gun I may get a craving for ham and cheese sandwich though!
