Mauser trigger improvement ??
« on: December 18, 2005, 05:41:49 PM »
If this has been asked before, my apologies...

Is there anything one can do to improve the trigger pull on a Mauser k98 without replacing the trigger?  I am referring to polishing or filing some areas to improve the smoothness of the pull not changing the weight of the trigger pull.  I've handloaded some 8mm Mauser that very closely duplicates WWII ammunition ballistics and I've got 1 1/2 groups at 100 yards with iron sights and I want to try and improve that by smoothing out the 2-stage trigger (it feels like I'm pulling against sand paper).  I am going to put a scout scope setup on this rifle as well using a non-drilling scope mount that replaces the rear sight.

After any attempts at improvement are exhausted, then I'll probably replace the trigger.  Are there drop-in replacements that do NOT require inletting/removal of wood around the trigger assembly?

You can moly the sears it will smooth it out as it works in. At Numrich gun parts there are cheap triggers that are modified to work in the mausers.

The 98 Mauser military triggers are fairly easy to smooth out and polish up, but there is a danger of removing too much metal in the process and not ahving a working rifle.  The web-sites given provide good instructions on smoothing out triggers, but we also have a resident gunsmith, gunnut69, in the gunsmithing forum.  You may wish to run your question past him.  He gives excellent advice.  HTH.  Mikey.

Thank you for the replies.  My work is done.  I removed the trigger, and was able to see the issue--I did have to use liquid wrench to help removing the sear pin though.

The receiver had machine marks where the trigger engaged the receiver, so I used a Dremel to polish (not removing too much) the marks away.  Mikey is correct, you can remove too much metal if you go nuts with course tools or work too fast, particularly with a Dremel tool.  I polished the trigger humps, the sear where it engages the cam lug, and the cam lug where it engages the sear with Arkansas stones.  The receiver is smooth as glass now, you can feel the difference b/w the polished area and a non-polished area.  Just need to reblue these areas now for some protection.

Many thanks.
