700 Receiver Sight
« on: December 12, 2005, 07:05:07 AM »
Howdy all.  I have a Remington 700 in 30-06 with the black plastic stock and matt finish.  Its a handy and accurate rifle but I'm thinking about mounting a receiver sight on it to help out my ageing eyes.  Anyone else done that?  Any recommended brands?  Did you have to drill and tap or cut the stock down?

Williams makes one that mounts to the two rear holes for the scope mount - I have one on my ADL .223 and it works great.

Thanks for the reply, Buford.  Did you have to put on a taller front sight?

With my aging eyes, I find it hard to focus on the front sight and the target at the same time.  I know this isn't what you asked but have you considered a fixed power scope in say 2.5??

Beemanbeme, that's not a bad idea, maybe even some kind of long eye relief scout scope.

But one thing I really like about my 700 is that if I close my eyes and bring the rifle up to shoot, when I open my eyes the sights are aligned.  When I had a 'scope on this rifle, I could never get a consistant "weld" on the stock.  It just seems like its made for open sights.  So that's why I figure some kind of peep sight is what I want, preferably one that doesn't need a taller front sight.

I checked out the Williams website and they do have one sight for the Rem 700 that requires drilling and tapping and the one that cma g21 pointed out that mounts to the rear scope holes.  That sounds like the one for me.

:D My handle should be peep sight shooter......I have 3 rifles with williams receiver sights on then.....They are fast to the target..The only one that cost me money installing one was the remington 7400 it had a gloss high comb stock.....could not get low enough on the stock to feel comfortable.....I called remington and they sent me a 1187 shotgun stock for a $120 plus shipping......Now I have a comfortable shooter.... But that was alittle expensive.....Couldn't get myself to cut and sand and try to achieve the remington gloss look on the original stock it came with...But years later I am happy.........Dale

Now just so I understand, this williams sight your talking about here fits to the rear scope mount holes? If so, this is what I've been looking for also. I shoot my ADL 30.06 open sights and would like the ghost ring rear sight which you can get for this Williams sight but ghost ring sights need to be closer to your eye than the factory rear sight.
So would someone tell me if this Williams rear sight, the one at Midway, mounts to the rear scope mount holes?
                      Thanks.

You're welcome!

I've got one on a Marlin 336. It may not be as precise as the larger side-mounted receiver sights, but it's good enough (and looks and feels better IMHO).

MERRY CHRISTMAS
