In order of importance (more or less) and some of the reasons why:

1. Price - <=$250 for the basic setup before mods.
2. Accuracy - Will be used mostly for punchin' paper. I'm looking for a lower cost way to pratice handgun skills.
3. Modifiability - Would like to be able to customize and improve overall preformance either myself or by sending it to a pro.
4. Noise - It's going to be used both outdoors and indoors. I'd prefer it to be on the quiet side.
5. Power - Not too terribly important, I doubt I'll be shooting much past 35 yards.

I'm sure I've omitted some important factors. Let me know what else to consider and/or your recommendations (and reasons why).

IZH46M it is just a bit over $250 ($269 actual price) but won't need any modification and shoots like a $900 match pistol.
It is super accurate, has a superb adjustable two-stage match trigger, excelent micrometric adjustable match sights, much more quiet than others at its power level, 465 fps with 8'2 gr wadcutter pellets. Excellent materials quality, fit and finish. You may modify the grips with a Dremel and some sandpaper for a perfect personalized fit, that's all modifications needed, apart from fitting a scope or red dot if you desire so.

I use a Beeman P-1 in my basement for bullseye slowfire practice. It simulates the weight and balance of my Smith 52 and my Clark .45, and helps keep my 'shooting arm' conditioned.

On the other hand (no pun intended) practicing slow fire with my air pistols seems to impede my timed and rapid fire scores. Recoil and a quick recovery is almost more important than an accurate shot.

So, what do you think?

For indoor or garage work...you can't beat the IZH-46M for price & quality.

I really like the look and the stats I've found on the IZH-46M. It sounds like that might be the ticket. Anyone here have an opinion on the BRNO TAU-7? I know it's a different animal being CO2 but nonetheless... What are the major trade-offs in the different power systems.

To totally confuse things I'm also wondering if I should consider a repeater of some sort. Breaking stance to reload sounds like it can get frustrating. So many options, so few dollars.

I've owned several inexpensive pistols ($50 and under) but this will be my first purchase of a serious airgun. My inexperience is showing I'm sure. Thanks for helping me out while I have fun learning. Your expertise is really appreciated.

The TAU-7 is a good pistol but the initial cost is more than twice that of the IZH46M. On the long run you'll have the added cost of CO2 and it won't shoot reliably in cold weather, it is also louder. Quality and accuracy is about the same on both pistols but most 10 meter competitors seems to prefer the IZH46M over the TAU-7. If I were to spend almost $575 for a TAU-7, I'll go way up and buy a Pardini K2S for $930.

On the repeaters, if you are looking for a high quality and highly accurate air pistol then forget about them, unless you are able to spend $1500 on a Steyr LP50.

There's nothing that comes close in quality and performance to the IZH46M on the $250 to $600 price range. Good luck with your purchase!

Without a doubt in my mind, you'll be happy with a IZH 46M. The cool part is the Russians like to include tools, cleaning rod and spare parts with their guns. Kinda neat.

You'd have to buy a pre-charged pnuematic to get better. And that will set you back the price of a scuba tank, European DIN yoke not to mention the pistol. It cost me $1100 to get in with a used rig.

I've got to agree with Edgehit and mjfa, the IZZY is the best value out there for 10m work. I've mounted a 4X scope on mine and if I could hold it still enough, I can put pellets in the same hole every time. I shoot silhouette in the garage with my IZZY utilizing the "taco hold"...it really is a lot of fun.

BTW, who cares if you have to break a stance or move around a bit between shots...what's the hurry? Slow and civilized target work is more fun anyway.
