Of sights Scopes and Older Eyes

Been shooting a muzzleloader recently that has fiber optic sights on it. First thing I noticed is that I can hit better with these than simple iron sights...I can see 'em. The irons on my Mosin Nagant are near impossible to see well enough to shoot well enough with to evaluate if it's me or the load that is lousy. I had the same problem with a Winchester 94 recently, and when I got my Handi 44 I came home disgusted one evening because I couldn't take a shot that was otherwise possible, because I couldn't see the lousy sight in the shadows I and the deer were in. That bad time of evening when a scope works but irons don't. I have put a scope on every Handi I've had since and just finished putting on on my 375 JDJ Encore barrel. I did notice at a gunshow this fall a fella had several NIB 500 SW's each was equipped with fiber optic sights

But I'm curious, of you guys with aging eyes, do you find hitting easier with the fiberoptic sights?

My favorite hunting spot has some really dark shade where I set,and after 5 or 10 minutes the glow go's away and they're just like my iron sights.These sight's were on my TC Bladkdiamond muzzleloader.  Digger

You might try a "red dot" sight. I know they look like a chunk of wood setting on top of a rifle but with it all you have to do is put the red dot on your target and heave the lead. :D

I've got peep sights and fiberoptic front sights on all my front stuffers, but would use optics in a heart beat if they were legal here, it just doesn't get any better than it does with a nice low powered scope for hunting. :wink:

Switched my rear sights to Peeps.  Everything I have either has scopes, light sights, or peeps, since I can't see the sights and the target at the same time.  Got a new NEF .17HMRF for Christmas put a light sight on it.  My huntsman has a peep, as does my .50 cal Encore.  Scopes are a no no here for muzzleloaders.  Would like to see that changed.  

You know though, what really burns me up is that the eye doctors keep telling me it is an age thing.  Yet my 78 year old Dad can use open sights just fine.

John i went to all scopes on everything.my Knight rife came with fiber optic sights but i took them off  and just use a scope

Nightrain52 is right about the Red Dots. I did not like the looks of them much before I tried one either. But what a relief to "old eyes"!!!....<><.... :grin:

Same here as far as my older eyes go. I have either scopes, red dots, or Williams peeps with fire sight fronts on my Handi barrels, same goes for all my other rifles. I have one rifle with a Williams 5D rear and brass bead front, but that's about to change cause I can't see it like I used to. :(

I'm not a big fan of regular red dot sites...but I did get a chance to look thru one of these...and if I ever did go to this type of site...would be the type I would go for...they definatly give you a heads up veiw and work real good as told to me by a couple friends..

I.m all scopes or red dots now, except for my centerfire auto pistols, figure I can hit at 25 yards or less with open sights on them.

JPH45-The nice thing about the red dot sight are you only have to put the dot on your target. Nothing to line up. The big downside to the red dots are most of the dots cover 3 or 4 moa at 100yds. so they aren't real great for target shooting but work fine for most hunting situations. :D

I have found that apperature sights work best for me. I started out with a fifty's vintage Mosberg 22 bolt that came from the factory with Lyman reciver sights. I had the gun for over thirty five years before I put them on, what an improvment! next I put a williams reciver sight on my 94 once again a marked improvment.........next I put a TC tang sight on my Renegade.....great... I won a Henry Golden Boy but I had a hard time focusing with the factory buck horn sights so I changed them after the first time at the range to a Marbles Tang sight.  I have to say I was truly impressed with the Marbles sight. It is a quality instrument. The up side to it all is you can remove the apperature from the sights and have a set of ghost rings............Jim
